Roman Polanski Releases Statement – Explains Why he Fled the United States

Roman Polanski released a relatively complex statement, so I’m going to try and break it down.  His main claim is that he already served his time.  He says that after he plead guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, he served time in a Chino prison, which was meant to cover the entirety of his sentence.  According to Polanski, the judge reversed the decision and claimed that he needed to serve more time – so he fled.  The documentary ‘Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired’ covered this story, and it confirms a lot of what Polanski is saying.  Both the District Attorney and Polanski’s defense attorney confirm the Judge’s erratic behavior and thirst for the media spotlight.  Regarding Polanski’s time in Chino, I think he is referring to the fact that when a case drags on, and a defendant is in prison awaiting trial, judges sometimes sentence you to “time already served.”  I guess Polanski was given the impression that this would happen when he plead guilty, and the Judge changed his mind.  Either way, I hope this case gets tossed for the sake of the victim, whose name gets dragged through the mud every time this comes out in the press.
