MTV Movie Awards — Fun. Featuring Janelle Monae — Watch

I never get sick of this song — or this record. And though the white suits were a pleasant surprise, my favorite part of the video below is Vanilla Ice’s audience cameo. Here’s hoping for an Ice Ice Baby comeback.

Quote of the Day — Adam Levine Brags About Getting Laid

“I felt like people only knew me as a singer who dated pretty girls. . . . A little bit of a bimbo. Maybe the reason I was promiscuous, and wanted to sleep with a lot of them, is that I love them so much. . . . I was the music dude that was naked all the time with the girls, and that’s fine. . . . But I wanted to create a little balance. When ‘The Voice’ came around, I thought, ‘People now know that I have a brain.'” The always douchey Adam Levine on the deep reason behind his man-whore syndrome.

Phillip Phillips on “Home” — “It’s Not My Single”

I just played Phillip Phillips’ new single, “Home” for a close friend who said, “Hasn’t the same guy won American Idol five years in a row?” I scratched my head for a moment and then thought, “Oh my God! She’s right!” America keeps choosing the sweet white boy with a guitar, and they have all faded off into never-never land (see Kris Allen, David Cook, and Lee Dewyze). So what’s the explanation for their post-Idol struggle? My guess is that it’s their desire to write their own music, despite having failed at that prior to their appearance on the show. They get on the show and think, “That’s the reason I didn’t make it with my original material. It’s because I just didn’t have enough exposure.” And they are usually wrong. As for Phillip Phillips, I was shocked last night when he performed the Drew Pearson track, “Home.” It represented today’s current music, and for the first time ever — American Idol didn’t feel dated. But my happiness is short-lived, because Phillips doesn’t agree. In fact, he wanted to perform his own music, but there just wasn’t enough time. When asked about the track, he said, “It’s a very good song and a great writer . . . [but] I’m excited to do my own stuff.” Watch below.

Phillip Phillips Wins American Idol — Cries Like a Baby

I love Phillip Phillips, and he deserved the crown tonight. He’s humble, and he’s talented. He’s also adorably close to his family, who he chose to hug instead of finishing his song, which he couldn’t sing because he was crying. Watch below.

Jennifer Holliday Performs “And I’m Telling You” With Jessica Sanchez — I’m Confused

Jennifer Holliday’s ‘Dreamgirls’ performance of “And I’m Telling You” has been copied more times than I can count, with every version less enjoyable than the original. In fact, most people forgot just how great she was after Jennifer Hudson took over. So although I was happy to see her on the American Idol stage, it was a little ridiculous to watch Jessica Sanchez try to keep up. Sanchez should have maintained her own style, but she instead copied all of Holiday’s over-the-top mannerisms that made Holiday famous. Watch below.

Ace Young Proposes to Diana DeGarmo — Pre-Planned?

Is nothing sacred anymore? On tonight’s finale of American Idol, Ace Young proposed to his long-time girlfriend Diana DeGarmo, and I smell a rat. I’m no rocket scientist, but when a man drops jeweler’s name on national television while proposing, it screams canned. Plus, she’s not the best actress. Watch below.

Phillip Phillips Sings “Home” — Will He Win American Idol?

Phillip Phillips’ original song shocked me. Apparently the American Idol song-writers got the memo about today’s music, and they turned in a folk-inspired tune in the vain of Mumford & Sons. It’s so much better than anything the very dated Jessica Sanchez sang. And by the way Jennifer Lopez — apparently you’re not listening to the radio. Your critique was moderately embarrassing.

John Legend Insults Britney Spears & Demi Lovato — How Dare He?!

Though I try to avoid throwing daggers at celebrities, I’ll make an exception for John Legend — who deserves it. When asked for his thoughts on Britney Spears and Demi Lovato judging X Factor, Legend said, “It’s interesting when people are judging singing competitions when they aren’t really singers.” Here’s my message to John Legend — at least Britney is interesting to watch. I’ve seen Legend in concert, and I missed most of the show because his music put me to sleep.

Carrie Underwood Performs “Good Girl” on DWTS — Looks Stunning

Carrie Underwood is a star. I mention this because it still surprises me that she shot to fame from ‘American Idol,’ and every time I see her perform — I’m reminded of what ‘The Voice’ isn’t. She’s classy, she has a great voice, and she’s gorgeous. Watch her form :Good Girl” on ‘Dancing With the Stars.’
