David Letterman Says They Should Have Given His Show to a Woman

letterman retirement

When David Letterman rode off into the sunset, he took a more traditional, structured form of late night televison with him, and what followed is viral videos of celebrities letting their hair down to play games and act out bits.  But the new landscape kept one tradition intact, and it’s the male-dominated format. One might argue that there were simply no women in the mix at that level, but a simple bead of sweat would have likely found a female gem. Translation? No one wanted to do the work required to find the perfect female host. They went with what they knew. In a new interview with Tom Brokaw, Letterman shared this same sentiment, saying, “I’m happy for the guys—men and women—there should be more women. And I don’t know why they didn’t give my show to a woman.” Tune in to the entire interview Sunday night at 7 p.m. as part of the upcoming limited series “On Assignment” from NBC.

Amber Heard v. Johnny Depp: The War Rages On

amber johnny

As a lawyer, I often hold all opinions about one’s guilt until all the evidence is presented, and that is because our judicial system is founded on the principle of “innocent until proven guilty.” Though fallible, I think no citizen, if given the opportunity, would change that presumption to “guilty until proven innocent.”

When Amber Heard accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence, many found it hard to believe, and some suggested that she was “victim-shamed” as a result. Domestic abuse is serious, and a false accusation is also serious. Despite leaking disturbing details about “fearing for her life,” Heard has made it clear that she has no plans to press charges, and there is no police report to corroborate any of her claims. Though character witnesses have come forward on both sides, there is not, to my knowledge, anyone who has come forward as a personal witness of Depp laying hands on Heard. The individual that called the police during a fight between Depp and Heard released an article for Refinery29, which I carefully read, and it does not indicate any first-hand witness of abuse. It is packed with hearsay. Yes, she personally saw Heard’s bruises, but she did not personally witness Depp lay a hand on Heard, which makes that article more about character than evidence. Depp’s friend also spoke out, vouching for Depp’s character, and stupidly claimed to “know” Heard is lying. He found out the hard way that when you use the word “know” instead of “think” you subject yourself to defamation, because he is now being sued by Heard.

If Amber Heard has no plans to press charges against Johnny Depp for domestic abuse, then what’s her agenda? Is it to help other victims of domestic abuse? If that’s the case, then why spend so much time leaking evidence to prove these disturbing events actually happened. Why not personally visit other victims instead? If these claims are true, I feel for Heard. I know that victims often remain quiet, and I can only imagine that the celebrity landscape makes it ever-the-more daunting to declare the truth. I also know that she filed a restraining order against Depp, and certain details will inevitably be revealed as a result. But every time I open my web browser I see more leaks. I do not believe in trying someone in the court of public opinion, and assuming one’s innocence is not “victim-shaming,” it’s the way it works. There is absolutely no choice but to call a victim’s character into question when an accusation of this magnitude is afloat. It sucks, but again – ask yourself if you’d rather our system presume guilt. This should be a criminal matter, not a social media one.

Is Grace VanderWaal the “Next Taylor Swift”?

AGT COWELL
Though ‘America’s Got Talent’ is painfully packed with trite platitudes about how “miracles can happen,” and the disturbing exploitation of our country’s youth, every so often — there’s a gem I can’t ignore. Grace VanderWaal was  called “the next Taylor Swift” by Simon Cowell, and that’s probably an understatement. Her tone is exceptionally unique, and I think Ed Sheeran would represent a closer comparison. Watch below as she sings an original song. Try not to vomit when you hear Howie Mandel’s predictable schmaltz-fest.

The success of carpool Karaoke still astounds me, but perhaps James Corden’s extremely likeable temperament has something to do with it. The latest installment is a lead-up to the Emmy’s, and with an all-star cast, it does not disappoint. Watch as he joined by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Audra McDonald, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Jane Krakowski.

Artist to Watch: Joe Gregory

JoeGregory

It isn’t difficult to predict the rise of Joe Gregory, whose ethereal sound is just catchy enough to sustain his artistic integrity while also being an enjoyable listening experience. The Seattle-based artist sounds a bit like The Killers, which makes sense since he’s working with mixing legend Mark Needham, who has worked with The Killers, Fleetwood Mac, and Imagine Dragons. Joe will be playing the Barboza Stage at the Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle, on Sunday, July 24. Listen to “Rare Poisons” below.

Team Harris v. Team Swift: Let the Battle Begin

CALVIN HARRIS TAYLOR SWIFT

Somewhere in the celebrity stratosphere is a team of tattlers that leak information to sustain the image of their precious money machines. And while Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris might have sung each other’s praises during their rather long courtship, the bad blood and disrespect was unfortunately bound to happen. If you would like to argue with me about whether their teams are behind the leaks, save your energy. From what I can gather, Harris started it. Here’s a list of leaks for your viewing pleasure.

TEAM HARRIS

“He didn’t feel like the relationship was leading anywhere.”

“Adam has been bored for a while and was hoping the spark would come back but it hasn’t

“Taylor is used to being treated a certain way.”

“Friends were even surprised it lasted this long because of the lack of chemistry.”

“It wasn’t an equal relationship. Their age difference might not be significant for many couples, but for them it was part of the problem too. Taylor somewhat lacks real-life experience. They will not be getting back together.”

“Taylor was starting to pressure Calvin into walking down the aisle and he just felt that he wasn’t ready yet.”

TEAM TAY TAY

“[Harris] said on multiple occasions that he was intimidated by Taylor, which is why he would not attend any events where she was being honored, or any award shows unless he was nominated.”

“The relationship wasn’t progressing the way she wanted it to. She felt like he wasn’t taking it seriously enough and wouldn’t come through for her when she needed him most.”

Numbers of Dumped #Turtles Explodes After Each #TNMT Film

TMNT‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’ is scheduled for release June 3, and American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) is on the case. ATR is asking parents to avoid the turtle-buying impulse and purchase a toy instead. According to ATR, “After a brief period, usually a day or two, of caring for a turtle, most children become bored and lose interest. Parents will realize that frequent tank cleaning is not their cup of tea, and either neglect the turtle until it dies, toss them in a pond or river or cart them off to the nearest animal shelter or turtle rescue.”

Buy a toy, not a turtle.
