The Rachel Dolezal Story: How Big News Steals Small News

Lost in the Rachel Dolezal story is the name of the original reporter that started the national craze about her race. Dolezal, the NAACP’s local chapter President, has long identified as black, when she in fact . . . white. The story surfaced when KXLY4’s Jeff Humphrey (an affiliate of CNN) asked her some tough questions, and she fled the interview. Humphrey was strategic in his inquiry, engaging in a long interview before exposing his true agenda, and carefully asking her race without appearing as a bully. “Ma’am, I was wondering if your dad really is an African-American man,” Humphrey asked.

Since that now well-known exchange, Humphrey been referred to as a “reporter,” with very few mentions of his actual name. In fact, The Today Show was celebrated for landing the first interview since that exchange, and all the credit thus went to an entity that did none of the work. It’s easy to get paid a $20 million dollar salary to suss out details of a story someone else uncovered, especially when that someone garnered the original facts. But if you’re going to capitalize on the work of others, give them credit and say their name.

Kim Kardashian Misspells Giorgio Armani’s Name

When you’re Kim Kardashian, the Twitter Gods can grant you just about anything, including discontinued foundation courtesy of Giorgio Armani, along with a stern schooling on how to spell the iconic designer’s name. Though it’s obviously an innocent mistake that could be made by just about anyone, everyone knows about Armani’s attention to detail, so the idea that he’d take some special time to correct a Kardashian gives me sweet satisfaction. Also, now that she’s making a spirited attempt at high-end fashion, there’s an extra special bow on top of this mistake. The brand has since deleted the tweet, presumably because they don’t want this type of attention. My advice? This is the exact type of attention they should want.

Rachel Dolezal Breaks Her Silence

It’s fine to self-identify as a different race or religion from that which you were born. If a man born as a woman changes his gender identity, it would be politically and morally insensitive to deny his new gender. So why not accept a white person who identifies as black? After all, being a minority comes with its own set of struggles, and the more the merrier right? We’re all going to be one race eventually, so who cares?

While Rachel Dolezal and her supporters (see Whoopi Goldberg’s argument below) might present that argument, it has some serious holes. First, Dolezal’s claims of identifying as black at the age of five by “drawing self-portraits with a brown crayon” don’t hold up since she sued Howard University alleging that she was discriminated against for being white. To Matt Lauer’s point in her interview on The Today Show, she’s identifying with whatever race suits her needs in the moment, rather than authentically self-identifying with a different race. Furthermore, no one likes a liar, and it appears as if she deliberately twisted the truth to perpetuate the public’s ideas. For example, she claims that a black man named Alfred Wilkinson is her father, justifying the lie by implying he’s been more of a father to her than her own parents. Wilkinson has removed himself from the drama by hanging up the phone on reporters, and there’s no evidence to suggest he raised her as his daughter in any capacity. Furthermore, there are legitimate questions about Dolezal’s claims regarding alleged hate mail she received, adding to the many questions surrounding her web of lies.

This is less about race and more about truth. The public will pounce on lies, with an eager effort to hold people accountable. Had she been honest about her life, perhaps she’d have been embraced. Now she just looks like a standard, “crazy white lady” in need of a serious mental health intervention. Watch her interview The Today Show and see Whoopi Goldberg’s take below.

Seth MacFarlane Sings Cyndi Lauper as Family Guy Characters

Seth MacFarlane graced the stage of Graham Norton alongside the legendary Cyndi Lauper, and the funny Family Guy voiced her most famous songs . . . in character. Watch MacFarlane sing “Time After Time” and True Colors” as Stewie and Peter.

Jeff Ross Roasts Criminals in Prison: Watch Clips

Until now, I’ve viewed Jeff Ross as a one-trick-Roast-pony. Sure he can hit Hollywood’s top dogs, but is he creative? Can he think outside his box of tricks and do something original? The answer to that question is yes. Ross crafted the original idea of roasting felons at a prison, and he found only one jail that would consent. According to Ross, it took a full year of behind-the-scenes production to pull this off, and his angst, though obviously elevated, waned once the roast began. Only those on good behavior got ot attend the roast. Watch clips below.

Rachel Dolezal Says She’s a Black Woman: WATCH NOW

There are many rats amidst Rachel Dolezal’s curious conversations about race, one of which is her biological parents’ desire to expose her lies. For those that missed the melee, Dolezal heads the NAACP chapter in Spokane, Washington, and she has allegedly misrepresented her race as black for much of her life. Her parents outed her claims, releasing pictures of their daughter as a freckle-faced white, blonde. It’s believed that Dolezal changed her hair texture and skin tone, along with lying about her own father’s race to perpetuate her public persona. Her black “father,” Albert Wilkerson Jr., has since come forward denying their relation. As for why her parents are so motivated to out their daughter’s lies, Dolezal believes it surrounds a molestation scandal and their subsequent estrangement.

Though the public would like to make this about race, it’s really about our desire to hold people accountable for their lies. It’s also about our voyeuristic approach to the delusions of others, along with our passion for pointing fingers. Like everyone else, I’d like to see a liar brought to justice under a public microscope.Does it hurt anyone to mis-identify race? Is it “black-face,” as many have suggested? Is it disrespectful to the black community? I’m not so sure. What I am sure of; however, is it is very, very weird, and I’d like an explanation.

Kendra Wilkinson + Hank Baskett Boot Camp: See a Clip

Kendra Wilkinson should send Hank Baskett a huge box of chocolates for his alleged affair because he’s successfully extended their much-needed fifteen minutes to a solid twenty. Nearly every clip of the desperate duo entails Wilkinson berating Baskett, without either party actually admitting what went down. If the rumor is true and this isn’t a carefully crafted reality-television setup, then perhaps Kendra can start elevating her torture techniques into eternity . . . because you know . . . it’s healthy for a marriage. As for Hank, he’s got a cash cow so I’m guessing he’s sticking around.

Vanessa Hudgens Owns The Tony’s With Stellar Gigi Performance

Despite a rather lackluster, awkward evening overall, there was one notable performance at The Tony’s worth mentioning. That performance came by way of Vanessa Hudgens and the cast of Gigi, and the star gave us all a stern reminder that her true talent lies in song, dance, and theater. Hudgens has taken a left-of-center approach to her post-High-School-Musical career, and while it’s worth it for many actors to branch out of the box, her star is way to shiny for darker roles. Hats off to Hudgens for the night’s best act. Though her revival f the romantic musical comedy Gigi, will sadly play its final performance on Sunday, June 21, she sure did give it her best shot. Watch below.
