Nyle DiMarco Dances in Silence on DWTS

Nyle_Dimarco_DWTS

Sometimes a little bragging is in order, especially when your suggestion was incorporated into a major network television show. When I saw deaf model Nyle DiMarco keeping up with his competitors on ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ I immediately though they should cut the sound so the audience could view the performance from his perspective. On last night’s episode, they did just that, and the result was captivating. Take a look at my tweet for evidence of my suggestion.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton Duet on ‘The Voice’

gwen_blake_thevoiceMy issue with Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s harmonies are similar to their general relationship. It’s a square peg and a round hole, and no matter how much they use the media to convince us of their love, the pairing just seems odd. But perhaps that’s a good thing. After all, Blake and Miranda seemed like a perfectly matched country couple, and that didn’t work. Plus, Gwen has a good track record for monogamy, having only been in two very long relationships for her entire life. Watch their performance of “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” on ‘The Voice’.

‘The Good Wife’ Series Finale – My Full Review

the-good-wife

It’s tough to end a television show, and when the creators and writers have long been tied to their characters, there’s a difficult balance between pleasing the audience and keeping one’s creative vision intact. ‘The Good Wife’ finale solidified that sad fact with its sub-par last episode, and the audience erupted in rage. In short, she didn’t get the guy, she left her husband, and she got a hard, literal slap in the face from her counterpart, who she arguably crossed for her own benefit. Did she learn anything or find any sense of real happiness along the way? I’d say no, but at least her long lost love made a post-mortem return in a fantasy scene, and we all got to say goodbye to the beloved Will Gardner (Josh Charles).

While I like the idea of a woman having a “happy ending” that is not dependent on a man, there was no happy ending for Alicia. I found an interview with the creators and listened to their cerebral explanation of the episode’s events, and I can only say that they have lived too long with these characters and lost sight of the big picture. According to Robert King and Michelle King, Alicia’s journey began and ended with a “slap,” the first for her husband and the last for her, as she slowly became the corrupt person that she resented in episode one (i.e. her husband). She looks ahead to the future and marches on sans man, and Jason Crouse (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has disappeared for a less complicated life.

As a lawyer, I resent the notion that zealous representation is corrupt, and I also resent the idea that Alicia’s sense of morality is somehow inversely tied to her ability to advocate for her clients. I believe she became a strong, no-nonsense individual that finally fought for what she wanted in life (a job, a divorce, and a decent love life), and she was not rewarded for any of those revelations. She was punished. It’s no one’s fault, though. Writers and creators just cannot adequately end television shows.

Hollywood’s Top 8 Most Sexist Films

KNOCKED UP

knockedupThough Katherine Heigl entered a firestorm for suggesting her character in ‘Knocked Up’ might be sexist, she was onto something. With a nagging wife and a killjoy girlfriend, it would be an understatement to suggest the women in the film were not well-represented. After all, what girl wouldn’t like her soon to be baby-daddy smoking weed all day? Only a shrew, of course. Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow did not take kindly to the criticism of their film, but it appears they got the memo, because in Rogen’s film, ‘Neighbors,’ his on-screen wife was portrayed in a far better, cooler light. In truth, Rogen admits to his real-life wife’s influence, saying, “My wife read the script. She’s a writer. She’s one of the people who was like, ‘This isn’t how it would be. We get along, I want to have fun too…’ And then as we started talking about it, that actually became the most exciting idea of the movie to us. That we could portray a couple where the wife is just as fun-loving and irresponsible as the guy, and they get along really well. In a comedy, that’s almost non-existent. An actual healthy couple that really likes each other.”

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
BlackWidow-AvengersOne might think a kick-ass woman like Black Widow was invincible, but everyone needs an achilles heel, right? In a bid to live a more normal life, Black Widow makes a play for Bruce Banner during ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ but he’s The Hulk, and there’s no future. Black Widow then gives a speech about her devastating infertility, which was a sad requirement of the job. It didn’t take long for the audience to erupt, objecting to the idea that all a woman really wants is to get married and have babies, even if she can save the world instead.

pretty womanPRETTY WOMAN

Do women need to be rescued? ‘Pretty Woman’ is timeless, which may or may not be concerning. It’s a classic Cinderella story, and it’s about time the roles were reversed, especially in an economy where women are increasingly more successful. Plus, what’s so wrong with prostitution? It’s the oldest profession there is (that’s a joke . . . . sort of).

AMERICAN HUSTLE

american hustleThough the movie itself might not be sexist, the Sony hacks revealed sexism behind-the-scenes when the public learned that the leading women in ‘American Hustle’ were paid less than their male counterparts. When Jennifer Lawrence addressed her sub-par salary in comparison to Bradley Cooper, she started a national conversation and other actresses spoke up on her behalf with similar stories.

JUMPER

Jumper‘Jumper’ might be responsible for the enduring, off-screen romance between Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson, but the under-performing action film fell short for its female lead, who was completely helpless throughout most of the movie. If only the writers could have jumped to the future to see Rebecca Ferguson kick some serious ass in ‘Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation.’

SEX AND THE CITY

SATC‘Sex and the City’ became famous for it’s anti-establishment view of single women, proving that there’s more to a woman’s goals than finding a man and having babies. But when Carrie finally landed the man of her dreams in the end, the show bowed to convention for the sake of its Mr. Big storyline.

JURASSIC WORLD

Bryce_Dallas_Howard_HeelsWho says a woman can’t outrun a dinosaur in heels? ‘Jurassic World’ received serious criticism for his portrayal of Bryce Dallas Howard’s character, whose incompetence was only surpassed by a strange desire to run around in heels throughout the film. Dallas Howard defended the decision, saying, “This character needed to seem ill-equipped to be in the jungle. She was somebody who looks like she belongs in a corporate environment for a reason because she was someone who was disconnected from the animals and disconnected from that reality and disconnected from herself. She doesn’t at all expect that she’s going to be tromping through the jungle.” As for the director, he insists that we don’t need to “to surrender a woman’s femininity in order for her to be a badass action hero.” I need not reiterate the Rebecca Ferguson point previously mentioned, as she was both feminine AND a badass.

TRAINWRECK
Trainwreck-PosterWhile many might tout ‘Trainwreck’ as a movie about an empowered woman taking ownership of her sexuality, Amy Schumer’s character was no Samantha Jones. Schumer didn’t help matters much on her press tour when she said the lead was acting out sexually because she was “in pain.” Does a woman really need a reason to get laid, and does an excessive amount of partners mean she’s “broken?” The ending felt like a standard romcom rescue rather than a woman’s struggle to give up her fun life for monogamy.

Fifth Harmony Reveals the Price of Fame With Billboard

BillboardFame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially when it cracks you up. Fifth Harmony has learned that the hard way, and according to the X Factor alums’ recent interview with Billboard, their touring schedule has take a severe toll on their mental health. In fact, one member watched her great-grandmother be buried on Facetime and another had “awful mental health situations,” largely caused by the depression associated with losing the youth that her friends are experiencing in college. Though I’m sure these girls are grateful for their accomplishments, this definitely falls under the category of be careful what you wish for. For more of their interview, head to Billboard.

Brandi Glanville Returns to ‘RHOBH’ to Bash Housewives

RHOBH3
The ‘Real Housewives’ have always bordered on bullying, but when Brandi Glanville returned to the reunion via video, things took a wrong turn fast. Glanville individually bashed each Housewife in a roast format, which would ordinarily be entertaining, except for the fact that she is not in fact a comedian. It instead seemed like a poorly planned plant on the part of the producers to stir things up, and if that’s what you want, then you should not have fired Brandi in the first place. Watch below to see the cringe-worthy monologue.

Woody Allen Interview: Talks Soon-Yi

woodyallen

The tortured tale of Woody Allen and Soon Yi Previn is decades long, and it reached its peak when his daughter from a previous relationship with Mia Farrow accused Woody of sexually molesting her (Woody adamantly denies this). He no longer speaks to the family he left behind when he married Soon Yi and needless to say, their relationship is flooded with vitriol. In a recent interview, Allen fanned the flames, explaining that he gave Soon Yi a better life. He still sounds a tad parental, but that might also just be Woody’s general nature.

One of the great experiences of my life has been my wife. She had a very, very difficult upbringing in Korea: She was an orphan on the streets, living out of trash cans and starving as a 6-year-old. And she was picked up and put in an orphanage. And so I’ve been able to really make her life better. I provided her with enormous opportunities, and she has sparked to them. She’s educated herself and has tons of friends and children and got a college degree and went to graduate school, and she has traveled all over with me now. She’s very sophisticated and has been to all the great capitals of Europe. She has just become a different person.

Rumer Willis Speaks Out About Photo-Shopping

There’s no bigger proponent of promoting natural looks than myself, and while magazines can certainly airbrush photos to diminish imperfections, there’s a vast difference between disguising a pimple and altering someone’s entire face. When a Vanity Fair photographer severely altered Rumer Willis’ jaw for a photoshoot, the outspoken star took to Instagram to ask for the photo’s removal and likened the act to “bullying.” It might seem like an interesting choice of words, but I’d say it’s accurate. What’s next? Photo-shopping nose jobs? The Willis sisters are especially vulnerable to attack, given that they are spawn of two of the most famous people in history. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. There’s no one standard for beauty, and everyone should not look the same. I won’t name names, but there’s certain people in Hollywood whose faces are so altered in similar ways, I cannot tell the difference between them.

Any friends of fans of mine who posted this I would appreciate if you took it down. The photographer Photoshopped my face to make my jaw smaller and I find it really offensive for anyone to try and change the way you look so drastically. I love the way I look and I won’t support anyone who would feel a need to change the way I look to make me beautiful. Whether or not they realize it, it is a form of bullying, which I won’t stand for.

Old Navy Features Interracial Couple: Racists Erupt

Old Navy revealed their latest add, which features an interracial family enjoying their clothes, and we’ve learned a few things as a result. First, racist people enjoy twitter. Second, we are not as far along as we once thought. Third, we might be further along than we thought, but racist people are just a little louder than everyone else who chooses not to comment on something that is actually normal. Fourth, Old Navy picked up on the natural hair trend, and that model looks fabulous. Fifth, I must buy a new button-down. And lastly, Louis C.K. is correct when he says that the future looks bleak for white people.
