The Avett Brothers joined Brandi Carlile for Letterman’s last on-air days with a rendition of the Carter Family’s “Keep on the Sunny Side.” The folksy performance had me longing for a bit more of the Avett Brothers and less of Brandi, but the combination certainly struck my fancy. These creative choices are curious, given that any air-time during The Tonight’s Show send-off means Letterman holds the guest in high regard. And clearly Dave has good taste. Watch below.

Britney Spears Extends Her Vegas Show
Britney Spears ditched those sparkly duds in favor of a more flattering outfit, and her plunging neckline worked well with her cute bob and sad cast. Spears’ embarrassing ankle-twist set her show back, but lucky for fans she’s extending her Vegas stint for three more months. Watch below as the pop tart seems surprisingly relaxed in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. Spears is notorious for nail-biting, anxious answers, but this time she seemed calm. Perhaps a standing Q&A does the trick.
Sofia Vergara Talks to Howard Stern About Embryo Battle
Sofia Vergara visited Howard Stern and the Latin beauty boldly discussed some heated life topics, including her embryo battle with ex-fiance Nick Loeb, her quick courtship with ‘Magic Mike’s’ Joe Manganiello, and the many times her son was mistaken for her brother. Vergara swiftly addressed the Loeb drama, explaining that if her ex wanted a different outcome to their original arrangement, perhaps he should not have signed their contract (twice). Listen to the very funny interview below.

Jennifer Lopez’s Selena Tribute: Watch NOW
Jennifer Lopez paid tribute to Selena at the Latin Billboard Music Awards, and she beautifully captured Selena’s unforgettable energy with a hip-swiveling, sequin-donning, body-con bash, followed by the toned-down, ‘I Could Fall in Love.” It’s nice to see Lopez honor the memory of Selena, along with a nod to the role that launched her career. Watch below for the full performance.
Woody Allen’s ‘Irrational Man’ — Watch Trailer Now
Everyone knows that teachers are simply lesser-paid rock stars. They stand on a stage for others to watch in awe, they seemingly have more knowledge of a craft than anyone else, and they’re charming. In fact, it might be the only profession with a shockingly disproportionate relationship between money and pussy. So why not make a movie about those artistic, comedic nuances? Well Woody Allen did it, and it’s called “Irrational Man,” starring Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, and Parker Posey. Watch the trailer below.
Bruce Jenner’s Biological Children Speak Out: Was He a Poor Parent?
Bruce Jenner was painted in a very positive light during the Diane Sawyer interview, yet the edit conveniently erased some important, not-so-flattering issues about his suspect choices. It’s was subtlety mentioned by Brody Jenner during Keeping Up With the Kardashians that he was not the best father, and I assume that was an impetus for his sons getting less face time on the show. And since he had a very prominent role as a step father to Kris Jenner’s four children, his absence is even more curious. Did his internal gender-identity struggle contribute to his poor parenting? If it did, why would he choose to father his four step-children instead of his own? Furthermore, if it’s true, as Jenner suggested, that Kris knew about his gender identity struggle, it would not make sense to assume he was running from the ex-wives that knew his secret. Watch some outtakes below, where his children discuss this very problem.

Bruce Jenner Reveals All to Diane Sawyer: My Thoughts
Bruce Jenner’s physical transformation has confounded me for years. “Why would such a good-looking man gratuitously undergo surgery to fix what is not broken?” I thought. “He had such a great nose, and now it’s small and looks like that of a woman.” Lastly (and by far the most reprehensible), “Is he mentally ill? What else would explain his obvious addiction to unnecessary surgery?” At no point did I ask whether there was a larger truth lurking behind the curtain. And given the media’s relentless pokes at his physical appearance, they never asked that question either.
After having the privilege of watching Jenner’s extensive sit-down with Diane Sawyer and later reading a moving exposé from his second wife, Linda Thompson, it’s suddenly become clear. Jenner revealed that he began transitioning in the eighties after a life-long struggle with his gender identity. He took hormone medication, removed his body and facial hair, and started to develop breasts. Both Jenner and Thompson agree that this led to the demise of their marriage, and Jenner also revealed that it largely contributed to the demise of his third marriage to Kris Jenner. As for his sexuality, he insists the comparison is “apples and oranges,” given that a gender struggle does not necessarily go hand-in-hand with sexual preference.
Sawyer’s soft-ball style fit well in this interview, especially since Jenner was more than willing to share his very private journey. She got out of the way, suspended all judgment, and provided the public with informational details about transgender struggles, which was beautifully woven throughout the exchange. My lone critique is that there should also be support for parents, friends, and spouses who are often judged for their lack of acceptance. Loved ones will also suffer great loss in this process, as Linda Thompson so elegantly explained, and they too are in need of help. We are all capable of unconditional love and acceptance, but sometimes our tool-kit is missing bolts. Perhaps Jenner’s brave revelations will complete that kit for many.
Bruce Jenner’s story is both sad and inspirational. Had he struggled during a time when society was more supportive and knowledgeable, perhaps he would have felt free to live his truth much sooner. But what better way to make up for past pain than to ease the road for others that suffer?

Robert Downey Jr. Walks Out on Interview: WATCH NOW
Press interviews are for pop-tart style questions, and any attempt for a heroic exclusive in that three-minute period is more about the interviewer’s desperation than a search for actual answers. When Robert Downey Jr. entered his rotational junket to promote The Avengers: Age of Ultron, he certainly didn’t expect a “Diane Sawyer” style inquisition. As a result, the only thing Krishnan Guru-Murthy accomplished was a bold walk-out from a seasoned pro sans any answers. Good job, clown. Maybe next time you’ll take the first two cues from your talent and change course. You’re no Howard Stern.
