The Problem With Amazon’s ‘Goliath’

You’d think a legal show created by David E. Kelley would actually involve the law, and you’d think a mysterious adversary would actually involve a little mystery. Unfortunately, Goliath is not the anecdote to my aching desire for another addictive legal drama.

I had high hopes for Goliath. It stars Billy Bob Thornton, whose mere presence alone exponentially raises a show’s stock value. In fact, it’s safe to say if a Thornton vehicle fails, everyone but Billy Bob Thornton could be to blame.

The show surrounds a once powerful lawyer, Billy McBride (Billy Bob Thornton), who is now a washed up alcoholic that hasn’t seen a courtroom in years. When he reluctantly agrees to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the client of the massive law firm he helped create, Billy and his resource-limited team uncover a deadly conspiracy. The life-threatening conspiracy actually gets Billy’s original client killed, only to be replaced by the young son of the deceased who also has a claim for wrongful death. That decision has holes, especially since if the defendant is a murderer, one might think twice about putting a child’s life in jeopardy. Plus, wouldn’t it make more sense to kill opposing counsel instead? It’s certainly more efficient. The story also unfolds far too quickly, and the defendant’s true crime and subsequent cover up becomes clear by episode three, thereby eliminating my interest.

David E. Kelley once reigned supreme in this arena, having created some of the best law shows of all time, including LA Law, Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, and The Practice. His sweet spot has always lied in his quirky characters coupled with a thorough understanding of the law and all its intricacies. As a lawyer, I feel confident in saying that he’s nearly always accurate, unlike many other law shows that cause me physical pain. The problem with Goliath, is that it’s as if Kelley forgot that sweet spot and nearly made it an afterthought. Most of the happenings take place outside the courtroom, and very little of the show is dedicated to the actual law. For example, it’s hard to believe in Billy’s talked-about talent when we never get to fully explore his skill set. He’s seems more like a crazed cowboy than a gifted lawyer, and that’s unfortunate. At least Kelley got his quirky characters right.

Having said all of the above, I’d give the show a solid C+, meaning it’s armchair enjoyable while watching my dishes, It is not; however, popcorn television.

Will ‘Live With Kelly’ Cast a School Teacher as her Sidekick?

Who would have thought that Kelly Ripa’s on-air sidekick might actually be an unknown star in the making? Rumors have long circulated that the producers of ‘Live With Kelly’ hoped to avoid the pitfalls of a polished, greedy co-host for the coveted gig, and instead wanted someone loyal and grateful. Who better to meet those standards than a Perkasie high school teacher of television production? The social-media-contest winner is reportedly in the running, and he will be invited back to test for the full-time job. After watching him in action, I get it. He’s humble, good looking, and a representation of the most important job we’ve got. Plus, it proves that the producers did some actual work to find him and that we don’t need to recycle the same, tired people in this fishbowl we call Hollywood. There’s also something about Ripa that thrives beside an unknown, rather than a long-time friend. It’s almost too familiar with someone like Andy Cohen or Anderson Cooper who, though qualified, are not the best choice. Watch a clip below, and decide for yourself.

Singer-Songwriter Sean Hayes @ The Satellite on November 10

Independent singer-songwriter Sean Hayes‘ distinct, folksy sound caught my attention years ago, and I’ve been following him ever since. The San Francisco-based musician has toured with Ani DiFranco and the Cold War Kids, in addition to having his music featured on various television shows, films, and commercials. As the SF Weekly puts it, he “succeeds on the tension between warm, resonant soul and dirt-road folk, all laced with a wandering troubadour’s coo.” The genre-defying artist will bring his talents to Los Angeles at The Satellite on November 10, and you can catch the rest of his tour dates below. Check out the video of his latest album, ‘Low Light,’

New ‘Walking Dead’ Trailer Features Negan: Watch Now

During casual conversation at many Los Angeles outings, the subject of my “free pass” comes up, and though Brad Pitt or Rob Lowe might be the easy choice, my selection is always the very sexy Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who first gained heartthrob status as Denny on ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ He has since had many memorable roles, the last of which was on ‘The Good Wife,’ and he can now be seen on ‘The Walking Dead’ as Negan, the villain of season 7. Just who will he kill, and does he look just as handsome while doing it? The answer to the second question is yes, and for the answer to the first, see below. You might find a clue.

Patrick Dempsey Talks Future With People Magazine

Patrick Dempsey just mastered the art of saying absolutely nothing AND everything about his personal life while promoting his upcoming film, Bridget Jones’ Baby. The former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star opened up to People Magazine about the reconciliation with his longtime wife, Jillian, saying, “Our marriage was not something I was prepared to let go of” and “I [learned] to prioritize. Our union has to be the priority. I wasn’t prepared to give up on her and she wasn’t either. We both wanted to fight for it.” Though he did not admit the source of their issues, tabloids have long speculated that Dempsey’s penchant for racing cars took considerable time away from their union, and he has seriously dialed back on the dangerous hobby since mending his marriage.

It’s worth noting that one can talk about his or her personal life without divulging too much, and Dempsey did it beautifully. The television star is also a rare breed of actor who can master both mediums, having had a successful film career prior to his resurgence as “McDreamy.” For more, visit PEOPLE.

Alicia Keys Goes Makeup Free: Starts a Conversation

Alicia Keys’ face value just went up exponentially, as the singer unveiled her makeup-free look to the world, proclaiming that she “hope[s] to God it’s a revolution. ‘Cause I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.” The public’s strong reaction to her bold choice, uncovered a few layers of latent judgment, as society has long held women to a higher standard of beauty. That being said, it’s worth nothing that all men on television ALSO wear makeup, it’s just far less obvious. In fact, Conan could possibly blend into white walls without bronzer (a joke he’s often made himself).

I’ve always maintained that women don’t look BETTER with makeup, they just look DIFFERENT, and sometimes it’s good to switch it up. Hair down, hair up, formal, casual, etc. The light and shade of life creates standout moments, and without contrast of any kind, things can be a bit lackluster. It is; however, interesting to see what people actually look like without their faces covered. It might be a movement, but here’s hoping going bra-less isn’t next.

Shonda Rhimes Guest Edits Good Housekeeping’s Awesome Women Awards

When you think of a strong, talented woman, Shonda Rhimes immediately comes to mind. The creator of television’s top shows chose to guest edit Good Housekeeping’s first-ever Awesome Women Awards for September’s “Connected Women” issue, and according to Rhimes, she was “excited by the idea that there would be an entire issue devoted to celebrating the awesomeness of women.” For a full list of honorees, click HERE. Enjoy some select quotes from Rhimes below, including what character she most identifies with, and the evolution of Meredith’s Grey’s character.
Shonda on how believing in yourself can make you an Awesome Woman: “The only difference between a woman and an awesome woman is how a woman defines herself, frankly. And what you choose to do with your life. I think if you believe yourself to be an awesome woman you are an awesome woman and, in general, you behave as an awesome woman. If you don’t believe yourself to be one, then you don’t. It’s really about what you believe about yourself.”

Shonda on the secret to life—‘nobody knows anything’: “I wish every awesome woman knew that the secret to life is that nobody knows anything. And nobody is better than you are. People deal with so much insecurity and spend so much time thinking, That person is better, so I couldn’t possibly try this. Yes, you can! Everybody puts themselves in little pockets and holds themselves back, but there’s no reason to. Make your own space.”

On how she comes up with her character ideas from her hit shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal: “People always ask me where I get my ideas from, where I get my story ideas from – I don’t know. To me, these women, in my head, they are real, and I try to make them as real as possible. I try to make them people you want to be friends with, people you want to spend time with. That’s always my goal… It’s not a business; it’s not a factory. The secret sauce is that it’s just creative.”

On the inspiration behind Grey’s Anatomy character Dr. Meredith Grey (played by cover star Ellen Pompeo):“That’s just changed so much over many years. I think in the very beginning she was a little bit me, a little bit Betsy Beers, my producing partner – somebody very new, somebody starting out in a new job. I had no idea how to make television when I started this job. Betsy had a mother who had Alzheimer’s. We sort of had this mix of things we had been talking about. But really – she went to Dartmouth, I went to Dartmouth. There were just pieces of her that fell like that. But the rest of it is just the secret sauce.”

On the strong, competitive female characters on her shows and who they’re modeled after: “I keep getting asked how I write about such smart, strong women, and my response is, “What’s the alternative?” Weak, stupid women? They’re just normal people, not role models – if you’re aspiring to be like any of them, something’s a little bit wrong. You may want to dress like one or have her job, but do not aspire to be her!”

The reaction from fans that surprised her most: “I was very surprised when [Grey’s Anatomy character] Derek died. I think I was surprised by how strong the reaction was. And I think I was surprised because in Season 11, to have that violent of an outpouring for a character, in show that – for us, you start making a show and think, “Oh, you know, it’s Season 11.” You think that people aren’t paying as much attention. But to have it be that big of a deal to have Timemagazine write an article on how to mourn a fictional character. There was a lot of that and it was startling to me to see how much they were not coping. It felt like somebody real had died.”

On which of her characters are most like her: “I don’t think I could ever even say that. I think all of my characters, down to [Scandal’s] Huck who likes to hurt people, all of my characters are a piece of me to some degree because they come from my brain. There’s no way to have a character who’s not me. And I think every writer feels that way. They all spring from the same place.”

‘I Am Cait’ Gets The Axe

‘I Am Cait’ was cancelled, and after watching two episodes of the show, it’s certainly no surprise. First, none of the Kardashians/Jenners are stronger than the sum of their parts, and second, Caitlyn Jenner is far from compelling. Bruce spent most of his life in the Kardashian closet (literally) as a recluse and rarely embraced the cameras. One could argue he was irritable because of his gender issues, but after watching ‘I Am Cait,’ it’s clear that is not the case. Lastly, the show had to basically buy her friends, because just about everyone who appeared was a “new” connection. And since her family refused to guest, there was no one left to insert any compelling content. Some people just aren’t meant for their own show, and I don’t think Bunim/Murray was at all equipped for what should have been a docu-series about each surgery and stage of her transition. I’m guessing Cait didn’t want to go that route, but that’s the interesting part. Without it, it’s just a show about someone’s not-at-all-interesting daily life.
