Sally Field Covers Ladies Home Journal

LHJMay2014CoverSally Field covered this month’s Ladies Home Journal to promote The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and she looked better than ever. Read some choice quotes from the Oscar winning actress below, and catch her on the big screen May 2nd.

On her new found freedom:

“This is the first time in my life I find myself standing in place going, Now what? Wait a minute, you mean it’s up to me? Suddenly my life is open to possibilities.”

On her recent move to New York City:

“There’s so much to do that sometimes I just say, ‘Okay, Field, you have to stop for two nights and just read your book!’”

On balancing work and raising children:

“The balancing act is hell, let’s face it.”

On how her kids acknowledge her celebrity status:

“They do and they don’t. It’s funny how they maneuver it. My older sons basically don’t let anyone know I’m their mom.”

On finding her voice to fight for the role of Mary Todd Lincoln:

“I usually don’t have the courage, but this time I knew I had to make a stand.”

On wearing her heart on her sleeve:

“If you keep your emotions in check and swallow them down and don’t talk about something that deeply moves you, then you’re living half a life.”

On finding the energy to pursue her passions:

“Sometimes I have a lot of energy. But what you don’t see a lot of times is that I’m very quiet and introspective.”

On her dating status:

“When you get to a certain age, you’re not dating. I’m not taking myself off the market – not that I’m on the market. I’m just alive.”

On her five-year plan:

”I’m just trying to look at what’s important to me, and let go of the things that are not of value. Right now, I’m looking at myself in the mirror and asking, ‘Who do I want to be when I grow up?’”

American Idol Hits Ratings Low — An Inside Look at What Went Wrong

Many entertainment outlets have widely reported on the decline of American Idol, with The Voice now taking the talent-show crown. While viewer fatigue might explain the end of an era, there has to more. First, this year’s judging panel is the best in years, so it can’t be the cast. Can it be the contestants? American Idol eliminated an essential component of previous years, moving up the start date during “Rush Week.” It’s possible this served to freshen the format, but it also threw the contestants into the deep end of the pool too soon. As a result, the top picks are much less polished. In fact, there’s really no standout performer to take the top spot. This failing can also be attributed to the judges who picked these players to place in the coveted live shows. And though Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban are proven powerhouses in the industry with incredible inside knowledge of music, that doesn’t mean they are adept at A&R. Actually, The Voice is also guilty of this critique, given that after multiple seasons on the air, they have yet to find a star. Simon Cowell might have been liked for his caustic barbs, but he also has a proven A&R track record, which might explain why American Idol has produced a wide array of big-name talent through the years (see Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, and more). And since he’s also responsible for assembling One Direction, it’s clear the man’s still got it. As for whether the show can be saved, I don’t have a solution other than to suggest the format is still not fresh enough in a now-competitive environment. Plus, these singers simply aren’t good enough. Watch the videos below to see the only singers that stand a chance.

Wendy Williams and Ross Matthews Work at McDonalds

Social media has forced companies to get creative about their promotion, and McDonald’s certainly reigned supreme by hiring Wendy Williams and Ross Matthews to serve coffee to unsuspecting customers. The two very funny hosts supported McDonald’s ‘Make Friends With McCafe’ event, which allows guests to receive a free cup of morning coffee until April 13th. Watch their surprised reactions below.

Stephen Colbert to Replace David Letterman: Jon Stewart Weighs in

In a predictably safe move, CBS picked Stephen Colbert to replace David Letterman, calling him one of the most “most inventive and respected forces on television.” Stewart supports the choice, calling Colbert “remarkable,” and emphasizing that he has “many gears” outside his restrictive Comedy Central format.

While this is certainly a safe pick, I must admit a slight disappointment. With the Late Night landscape changing, CBS could have competed with a fresh new face or a female. They instead chose to stick with their traditional brand. It does beg the question though — If you’re going to choose someone that aligns with Letterman’s style, why not just keep Letterman?

ACM Awards — WATCH Keith Urban

Whoever produced this year’s ACM performances had a major misfire. Most of the performance pairings simply didn’t work, with ill-fit harmonies and poorly contrasting genres. On top of that, some of the biggest stars were painfully out of tune, which I can only assume is because they had trouble hearing themselves. I won’t name names, so I’ll merely point out one of the only shining stars of the night, Keith Urban. Watch below.

Lara Spencer and Amy Robach LOVE Each Other?

I find it incredibly suspicious that Amy Robach and Lara Spencer were conveniently spotted at lunch together and a TMZ camera just happened to catch them in action. According to TMZ, the leading ladies on Good Morning American have bad blood, with Amy allegedly feeling as if Lara didn’t have enough journalism experience to justify such a coveted role. While it might be true that they’ve kissed and made up, I’m guessing it was at the insistence of ABC executives, given that GMA’s ratings are contingent upon their One-Big-Happy-Family image. And since The Today show ratings fell victim to the same rumors, it’s extremely important that these kinks get smoothed out. Watch their schmaltzy performance below.

Brown Bird’s Dave Lamb Passes Away — Sad Day in Music

In some of the saddest news to recently come across my desk, it’s come to my attention that Brown Bird’s Dave Lamb has passed away from Leukemia. I’ve been following the band’s journey since their performance a few years ago at The Satellite, and especially since MorganEve announced that the band became sidelined by Dave’s illness. Many fans donated to the romantic and musical duo to keep them afloat while they fought Dave’s disease, but unfortunately, he recently succumbed to his illness. I wish it was possible to articulate the magic of their live performance, but the good news is that Dave’s soul will forever live on through his music. Watch Brown Bird perform ‘Thunder and Lightning’ below, and take some time to discover their music.

David Letterman Retires — Should Zach Galifianakis Replace Him?

After much research, many projections, and endless suggestions, I’ve personally picked the perfect replacement for David Letterman. Zach Galifianakis is the only option that fits. He’s young, he’s fresh, he’s innovative, and most importantly — he’s hilarious. His ‘Funny or Die’ sketch with President Obama solidified his high-status success, and his down-to-earth, every-man presentation makes him more unique than his competitors. As for the other names being thrown around, I’ll take a moment to tell you why they won’t work.*

1. Howard Stern — He’s a radio legend, but Stern himself has complained about network restrictions, and the man is at his best in a free-spoken format. Plus, if it ain’t broke . . .

2. Chelsea Handler — Chelsea is too niche a host to survive in a prime-time format. She’s certainly a strong choice, but her mass appeal is questionable.

3. Craig Ferguson — Not funny enough (sorry, Craig).

4. Chris Rock — Much like Howard Stern, this format is far too restrictive for Rock’s imagination.

5. Louis C.K. — Maybe. But probably not.

6. Conan — One and done. His brand became tarnished with the late-night debacle, and his opportunity on the main stage is now compromised.

7. Jay Leno — NO. JUST NO.

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT.

*EDITOR’S NOTE: Zach Galifianakis was actually my brother’s idea, but don’t all the best artists steal?

Michael Jackson Wrote Music A Capella — LISTEN NOW

There’s no doubt about Michael Jackson’s genius, but what’s shocking about the man who dominated his genre is that he didn’t play instrument. Instead, he wrote music by singing all the instruments A Capella. Listen to his demo for ‘Beat It’ below.
