Julie Chen v. Jenny McCarthy — Is ‘The View’ Doomed?

Jenny McCarthy Barbara WaltersJulie Chen visited the King of all Media to promote ‘The Talk’ and she admirably answered the shock jock’s probing questions with honesty (except for the nose job one). One such question was whether ‘The View’ made a mistake with its new, non-politics direction. Howard Stern then asked about Jenny McCarthy, and Chen insisted that McCarthy is more suited for a pop culture format, and since ‘The View’ has always been known for hard-hitting topics, she simply doesn’t fit in.

The interesting irony of Julie Chen’s comment is that Jenny McCarthy is no more suited to discuss politics than Survivor contestant Elisabeth Hasselbeck. In fact, it might actually be  more interesting to hear the former playmate’s take on harder topics.  It’s unfortunate; however, that Jenny McCarthy got caught in the cross-hairs of a more interesting debate. Is it true that ‘The View’ made a mistake with it’s new format? Though it pains me to say this, the answer is yes.

ABC fell victim to a common error with its revamp. They listened to the public. While it’s true that public opinion matters, a major network should be led by their opinion, not bound to it. Elisabeth Hasselbeck was too contentious and off-putting, and she made ‘The View’ uncomfortable to watch while unwinding. That being said, just because one person is poisonous, that doesn’t mean the format should be entirely trashed. There are a million resources for pop-culture, and I have zero interest in watching a group of women debate what I can find in any other forum imaginable. But try finding a show that discusses political issues with entertaining, non-experts and a spoonful of sugar (there aren’t many).’The View’ was a resource to learn about intricate political topics with ease, and they have now become a bunch of girls gabbing about gunk. I get it. They want to be one with the times. Hopefully they will learn what those times actually are before it’s too late.

For those unfamiliar with the film and television production of ’12 Angry Men,’ the legendary plot all takes place in the jury room, as each juror deliberates the fate of a young man accused of murder. While 11 of the jurors enter the room convinced of his guilt, one is not. The lone juror slowly persuades the pool to pick apart the evidence piece-by-piece, and what follows is fascinating.

Director Sheldon Epps stayed true to the original production, except for casting six black actors on the jury, including lead actor Jason George, who is known mostly for his television work (see ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Mistresses’). George’s approach to the role was less subtle and more determined than his predecessors, almost bordering on smug. It’s a near impossible task to portray subtlety on stage, especially when the lead is fighting for something with consistent conviction. I would have preferred a more understated performance, but he certainly had a steep hill to climb. As for Gregory North, he was nothing short of brilliant. He’s the antagonist to George’s character, and his unwavering insistence of the defendant’s guilt is simultaneously dogmatic and effortless.

There’s a few things of note in this production. First, it was a bold choice for Sheldon Epps to cast six black jurors, most notably Jason George as the lead. Though I applaud the monumental idea, it warrants some changes to the play that he didn’t make. For example, many of the jurors are unequivocally convinced of the young man’s guilt because of his race. Their racist stereotypes are at times boisterously expressed, a choice that seems unbelievable when surrounded by 6 other minorities. Even racists are rarely that bold about their bigotry, especially in this type of setting. If it were me, I would have kept the lines, but had one character whisper it to another, rather than yelling it in front of the others. The other option is to have the character look directly at one of the minorities when saying lines such as, “You know how those people are.” Without that change, the dialogue seems odd.

The other issue is the stage blocking and pacing. There needs to be pauses in the dialogue to build the necessary tension for which this story is known. Without that, some of the biggest reveals in the play are blurred, and the epic reaction from the audience is lost.

Despite some minor failings, this play is worth seeing. It’s a classic story that is also unfortunately timeless. The same racist ideas and sad jury failings are just as prevalent today as they were many years ago, and the story is engaging throughout.

The play runs now through December 1st. Get your tickets HERE.

Sherri Shepherd v. Instagram (And an Ice-Cream Breakfast)

If you missed The View yesterday, then you didn’t see the epic rant from Sherri Shepherd, where she scolded the show’s Supervising Producer for letting her son follow Sherri on Instagram. Shepherd insisted he was too young for the social media outlet, implying that the Supervising Producer in question made a bad parenting decision. On today’s show, the Supervising Producer spoke up, insisting that her son knows Shepherd personally, and only follows her because she’s his good friend’s mother. And just as the time began to dwindle, and it became very clear she was losing the battle, she admirably brought out the big-guns, saying, “It’s all about priorities. My son slept at [Shepherd’s] house and she fed him ice cream for breakfast.”

And there you have it. When attacked, come prepared. Watch the hilarious clip below.

Jenny McCarthy Makes her View Debut — How’d She Do?

Months before Jenny McCarthy got her job on The View, I tweeted the show asking that they make her a permanent panelist. It’s clear she was being courted amongst other potential candidates, but she stood out. She’s relaxed, open, seasoned, and most of all — not contentious. And given that Jenny doesn’t do well without barriers, this is the perfect format to reign in her rebellious side. The View is meant to be a nice relief, so it’s a breath of fresh air to lose the always on-edge Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who was constantly at war with her co-hosts. In another format, perhaps Hasselbeck will shine. But in this one — it’s McCarthy’s game. Watch a clip of her first show below.

Sandra Oh Leaves Grey’s Anatomy — Goodbye, Dr. Yang

This news is devastating. Sandra Oh has officially declared her decision to leave Grey’s Anatomy when her contract expires at the end the upcoming season. Oh is an original cast member, and in my humble opinion — is the heart of the show. Her acting skills caught my attention in ‘Sideways,’ and she’s since solidified her chops with a character that is both strong and vulnerable, a delicate balance that only the best can achieve. Click HERE to read what series creator Shonda Rimes had to say about her departure, and watch the clip below to see Sandra Oh at her best.
