Z100 Jingle Ball — Watch the Top Performances

The year’s top singers jammed at the Z100 Jingle Ball, and the annual music event is worth watching. Enjoy some videos below, along with my take on each act. You can catch the full show on The CW Network Thursday, December 18, at 8 p.m. EST/PST.

IGGY AZALEA

From her hair-poof to her baseball jacket, to the jersey-wearing backup dancers, everything about Iggy Azalea’s aesthetic is dated. While she’s certainly a compelling act, it’s time to chuck her creative team in favor of folks with innovative ideas.

ONE REPUBLIC

Ryan Tedder could have spent his entire career writing hits for other artists, and he’s instead expanded his impressive resume with One Republic, where’s he equally compelling. Though he sounded slightly flat at the Jingle Ball, I’ll chalk it up to the overall sound of the venue, given that he’s always on his game.

ARIANA GRANDE & JESSIE J

Speaking of dated, can someone tell Ariana Grande that Mariah Carey circa 1999 is out of style? White pumps are not her friend. Plus, if those two tarts are going to perform beside each other, can’t they match their style scheme? To be fair, I prefer Jessie J.’s personality and Ariana Grande’s voice, so perhaps this is the perfect fit. Watch below.

SAM SMITH

Though my music manager friend calls Sam Smith boring, I’ll never get tired of his voice.

PHARRELL & GWEN STEFANI

Pharrell is the industry’s most consistent force, writing for every top name in the business, including Gwen Stefani who joined him onstage for an errrrrrr . . . interesting song. It was . . . colorful.

Jennifer Lopez Revisits “Bennifer” — WWHL

Jennifer Lopez joined Andy Cohen for her club house debut, and and she did not disappoint. During the pressure-cooked “Plead the Fifth” segment, Cohen asked Lopez about the days of “Bennifer,” and Lopez admitted her role in Ben Affleck’s infamous fashion transformation. As a refresher, Affleck took a ton of heat for his red-carpet look beside Lopez, with many suggesting that she tried to change the down-to-earth Boston boy into a Hollywood heavyweight. Watch Lopez honestly discuss their relationship below, followed by some heated questions about an illusive feud with Mariah Carey.

Mariah Carey’s Album Under Performs — What Went Wrong?

MARIAH CAREY CANDY BRALegendary artists who hope to find success in today’s fast-moving market have to re-brand. If they don’t, they’re done. That’s a lesson many will learn the hard way, and Mariah Carey is no exception. Her latest album, ‘Me. I Am Mariah . . . the Elusive Chanteuse,’ entered the Billboard 200 chart at No. 3 with 58,000 sold, her lowest sales in a very long time. While her inner circle will likely cite today’s shrinking album sales as the source of her issues, the hard truth is that Mariah Carey is stubborn, and she simply won’t evolve. In fact, the very title of her recent album is evidence in itself. ‘The Elusive Chanteuse’ is not only a ridiculous name, it also suggests that she’s a diva, which is something she needs to desperately stay away from. The only place for an untouchable diva in today’s market is Vegas, and that’s where stars go to die in a pile of cash. There’s nothing wrong with dying in diamonds, but it’s a sad fate.

If Mariah Carey wants to revamp her career, I’d advise her to look to Jennifer Lopez, who accomplished the very hefty task of ending all PR Issues in favor of a completely fresh image. Lose the gloves, lose the “Dah-lings,” stop posting low-grade, bikini-selfies on social media, and put the boobs away. You’re a star, not a diva. Get it straight.

Mariah Carey in a Candy Bra?! — WHAT????????

MARIAH CAREY CANDY BRA

Somewhere behind Mariah Carey’s strange online antics is a down-to-earth girl from New York who knows how to have an articulate conversation without using words like “darling.” But if Carey had her way, I’d be the only person who knew that. Despite her talent, she’s still determined to prove herself, and that endless desire for accolades has damaged her brand. Her latest antic involves multiple twitter pictures sans clothes while in a candy bra waiting for her husband to arrive at home. While I realize twitter is a forum for a peak into your private life, there are lines, and this crosses it. To be harsh, it reeks of desperation, which isn’t necessary for someone of her vocal prowess.  Plus, the pictures aren’t pretty, which is an entirely different issue. Watch her new video below. One can’t be sure, but she may or may not be a mermaid in it.

American Idol Premieres: New Judges, New Look

It takes a sharp eye to discover the subtle changes in this season’s American Idol, but it’s enough to elevate the show to its former powerhouse status. For years, the show felt dated. It felt as if the producers were stuck in time, and they rested on their laurels in an attempt to use nostalgia as edge over it’s competitors. Its only attempt at redirection was the Mariah Carey/Nicki Minaj experimental panel, and we all know how that ended. But this time, they got it right.

This year’s panel of judges includes Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr. While Jennifer Lopez is a key component for the show’s classy, contemporary status, Harry Connick Jr. is the new star. His musical knowledge is immediately apparent, and he’s less inclined to favor the vocal acrobatics that has become the show’s enduring staple. Plus, it sure is nice to rid American Idol of Randy Jackson’s infamous “pitchy” critique. This is a singing competition, and it finally feels as if the judges have something to offer the contestants. To see their chemistry in action, watch the judges on Ellen below.
