Eminem Releases ‘Marshall Mathers LP 2’ — A FULL REVIEW

“The best part about me is I am not you, I’m me. I’m the fire marshal, and this is my legacy.”

When I started to review Eminem’s record I immediately poo-pooed my own objectivity, given my die-hard devotion to the rapper. Then it suddenly hit me — I used to hate the guy. In fact, I remember putting on my princess crown and preaching that his raps were disrespectful, disturbing, and down-right offensive. Then I grew up, listened to every album in full, and converted to his kingdom.

For years, I and many others have pondered what Eminem would produce when he became less angry. He’s been honest about his new-found sobriety and his subsequent attitude change, and it’s a common suspicion that happiness often kills creativity. But after listening to his most moving song, ‘Headlights,’ where he makes peace with his mother, it became instantly clear that nothing kills Eminem’s creativity — and he’s fully capable of presenting every emotion in every song. Though the anger that made him famous is still prevalent on ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2,’ so is his healthy new state of mind, and that variety has created perhaps his most powerful album yet. Listen to ‘Headlights,’ below.

Kanye West Rants to Ryan Seacrest — He Still Doesn’t Get It

Kanye WestAt some point in our lives, we’ve all had moments in time when we’re free of the world’s restraints. Then suddenly, after skipping through the clouds impervious to criticism, we put on our jeans and realize they no longer fit. Soon enough — Kanye West’s jeans will no longer fit, and he’ll be too bloated to recover. Sure he can get away with his prophetic proclamations and narcissistic rants now, but before he knows it, the public will flee.

And if you’re curious what inspired my musings, you need only listen to the interview below, in which West once again gives himself unconditional accolades, followed by the canned laughter from the sycophantic Seacrest. The most startling part of the interview is West’s recap of the Taylor Swift incident, and his insistence that his own daughter would have agreed with the idea that Beyonce’s video was superior. It’s absolutely astounding that this guy still doesn’t get it, but I’ll summarize this once again for sport. The issue is not who had the better video. The issue is that you pounced on a young girl’s moment to scream for an arbitrary injustice. And the massive irony is that West himself cannot accept criticism on any level, and yet he felt free to fire it out with ease. Perhaps the reason his creativity is no longer commissioned by high-level designers has more to do with his personality than his abilities. And while that might seem like a grave injustice by the standards of Kanye West, I’ll close with a very annoying yet appropriate statement that my father used to say to me at a young age. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD.

The Voice: George Horga Jr. v. Juhi — WATCH NOW

There’s a reason Cee Lo Green hasn’t won The Voice, and the video below is a perfect example. George Horga Jr. competed against Juhi, who stole the show singing her part of Gavin DeGraw’s ‘The Best I’ve Ever Had.’ Cee Lo voted for George, and Adam Levine swooped in to rescue the very talented Juhi, who will likely go far in the competition. To be fair to George, this was one of my favorite all-time battles. Watch below.

Cold War Kids Interview — Nathan Willett Talks ‘Tuxedos’ EP

Cold War Kids

I discovered Cold War Kids a few years ago, and when I paraded around Los Angeles asking others if they had found this hidden gem, I quickly realized they are not so hidden after all. To date, the Long Beach-based band has released four albums and over five EPs, and their extensive touring schedule indicates a very loyal following. I had the fortunate pleasure of attending the first show for their latest tour, and it became immediately clear that this band thrives on performing live. Their on-stage energy is contagious, and they not only feed off their fans, but also each other. When I played their most recent EP, Tuxedos, I was mesmerized by the haunting sound, and I immediately seized the opportunity to interview lead singer Nathan Willett.

Your new EP, Tuxedos, is a very stripped down version of your previous material. Was that sound an intentional choice?

I don’t think necessarily that it was a plan, but you know even on the record itself it’s kind of more down-tempo.

Do you look at your EP’s as an opportunity to do something different?

It’s definitely an opportunity to do something different. You’re not going to have as critical an eye or the same expectations. [It’s about] the fun of knowing you’re getting to release these songs and it’s something that the true fans are more likely to dig into. We’ve always done it from the very beginning. We had three EP’s before we put out our first record.

The Voice Battle Rounds — Caroline Pennell Kills It

There’s no doubt that if you want to find the best talent, you need only look to The Voice. There’s also no doubt that NBC is notoriously terrible at post-show promotion, which means that, unfortunately, every participant will fade into non-existence. Having said that, watch the video below of the incredibly talented Caroline Pennell, whose unique tone far exceeds her range. It’s too bad NBC knows nothing about fostering musical talent. Otherwise this girl would go very far.

Quote of the Day: Obama Urges Boehner to Hold a Vote

President Obama“Speaker Boehner keeps on saying he doesn’t have the votes for it. And what I’ve said is, put it on the floor. See what happens. And at minimum, let every member of Congress be on record. Let them vote to keep the government open or not. They can determine where they stand and defend that vote to their constituencies. And let them vote on whether or not America should pay its bills or not. And if in fact some of these folks really believe that it’s not that big of a deal, they can vote no. And that’ll be useful information for voters to have. And if it fails, and we do end up defaulting, I think voters should know exactly who voted not to pay our bills, so that they can be responsible for the consequences that come with it.” President Obama’s challenge to John Boehner to prove he doesn’t have the votes to pass a “clean” continuing resolution through the House of Representatives to end the government shutdown.

Caroline Pennell Sings ‘Anything Could Happen’ on The Voice — WATCH NOW

If you follow The Voice, then you know that Blake Shelton picks his contestants based on tone, not range. That philosophy has served him well, garnering three wins as a mentor on the show. So when Caroline Pennell sang ‘Anything Could Happen,’ I knew Blake would immediately turn around. Unfortunately, Caroline missed the memo on the most loyal judges and chose Cee Lo Green as her mentor, in what will likely result in post-show oblivion. Watch her strikingly good performance below.
