Quote of the Day: Mel Gibson Wants You to Forget “Sugar Tits”

“It’s pretty old stuff. It’s ten years old. It’s an unfortunate incident, I was loaded and angry, and arrested, so, you know, these things happen. I was recorded – illegally – by an unscrupulous police officer who was never prosecuted for that crime, and then it was made public by him for profit. So – not fair.

Ten years have gone by. I’m feeling good. I’m sober, all of that kind of stuff, and for me it’s a dim thing in the past. But others bring it up, which kind of I find annoying, because I don’t understand why after 10 years it’s any kind of issue. Surely if I was really what they say I was, some kind of hater, there’d be evidence of actions somewhere. There never has been. I’ve never discriminated against anyone or done anything that sort of supports that reputation. And for one episode in the back of a police car on eight double tequilas to sort of dictate all the work, life’s work and beliefs and everything else that I have and maintain for my life is really unfair.”

The Problem With Amazon’s ‘Goliath’

You’d think a legal show created by David E. Kelley would actually involve the law, and you’d think a mysterious adversary would actually involve a little mystery. Unfortunately, Goliath is not the anecdote to my aching desire for another addictive legal drama.

I had high hopes for Goliath. It stars Billy Bob Thornton, whose mere presence alone exponentially raises a show’s stock value. In fact, it’s safe to say if a Thornton vehicle fails, everyone but Billy Bob Thornton could be to blame.

The show surrounds a once powerful lawyer, Billy McBride (Billy Bob Thornton), who is now a washed up alcoholic that hasn’t seen a courtroom in years. When he reluctantly agrees to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the client of the massive law firm he helped create, Billy and his resource-limited team uncover a deadly conspiracy. The life-threatening conspiracy actually gets Billy’s original client killed, only to be replaced by the young son of the deceased who also has a claim for wrongful death. That decision has holes, especially since if the defendant is a murderer, one might think twice about putting a child’s life in jeopardy. Plus, wouldn’t it make more sense to kill opposing counsel instead? It’s certainly more efficient. The story also unfolds far too quickly, and the defendant’s true crime and subsequent cover up becomes clear by episode three, thereby eliminating my interest.

David E. Kelley once reigned supreme in this arena, having created some of the best law shows of all time, including LA Law, Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, and The Practice. His sweet spot has always lied in his quirky characters coupled with a thorough understanding of the law and all its intricacies. As a lawyer, I feel confident in saying that he’s nearly always accurate, unlike many other law shows that cause me physical pain. The problem with Goliath, is that it’s as if Kelley forgot that sweet spot and nearly made it an afterthought. Most of the happenings take place outside the courtroom, and very little of the show is dedicated to the actual law. For example, it’s hard to believe in Billy’s talked-about talent when we never get to fully explore his skill set. He’s seems more like a crazed cowboy than a gifted lawyer, and that’s unfortunate. At least Kelley got his quirky characters right.

Having said all of the above, I’d give the show a solid C+, meaning it’s armchair enjoyable while watching my dishes, It is not; however, popcorn television.

Kendall Jenner is Not a Ballerina — And That’s Okay

I get it. Making light of someone’s profession is objectionable, but the content of Kendall Jenner’s Vogue Spain ballerina shoot (the video below) sheds light on the choice. We all love ballet, and many of us donned our tutus as a child in hopes of one day making it. If we’re not thinking of Misty Copeland, then we’re thinking of our younger, carefree self. I think we all need to give it a rest. She’s not “representing” ballet, she’s simply inspired by it. Also, I’m sure the concept was not even her decision.

Watch Blood Orange’s Stunning ‘I Know’ Video

Devonte hynes

As the third album of Devonte Hynes (ake Blood Orange), ‘Freetown Sound’ is written and produced by Hynes himself, and the man further proved his artistic prowess with the video for “I Know,” featuring eye-catching ballet moves that fall far outside the box. Formerly known as “Lightspeed Champion,” Hynes also wrote produced worked for Solange Knowles (among others), including the very memorable track, “Losing You.” His new record follows 2011’s ‘Coastal Grooves’ and 2013’s ‘Cupid Deluxe.’ Watch below.

Watch Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon at Camp Winnipesaukee

Nothing pleases me more than watching Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon together. First, Timberlake always delivers, and I’d even go so far as to suggest he become a permanent fixture on The Tonight Show. Second, nearly every person on the planet says Timberlake is both professional and kind, and he often operates without the traditional entourage we so often see with bloated celebrities. Third, who would have thought he’d have the comedic timing to facilitate sketch comedy? And lastly, he might be the only boy-bander in history to move beyond his teeny-bopper status into a legitimate, rich career. Watch below to see the twosome sing “Ironic” at Camp Winnipesaukee.

Mariah Carey and James Packer Break Up: Reality Show to Blame?

Reality shows might not ruin relationships, but the types of people who seek them out might not make the best romantic partners. Such is the case with Mariah Carey and James Packer, who have reportedly split as a result of her new show. Tabloids have recently documented the plight of Carey’s career due to her controversial new management, and many have suggested that the decision to star in a reality show just proves that she’s receiving poor guidance. One would think she’d learn a lesson after her much-publicized previous relationships and keep her new romance private, but she has clearly taken another, unfortunate route. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Somewhere deep down there is still a denim-clad, down-to-earth New Yorker, but she’s gotten lost. The only way back is to channel her true self, nix the diamond-bragging, and never use the word “dahhhh-ling.”

Will ‘Live With Kelly’ Cast a School Teacher as her Sidekick?

Who would have thought that Kelly Ripa’s on-air sidekick might actually be an unknown star in the making? Rumors have long circulated that the producers of ‘Live With Kelly’ hoped to avoid the pitfalls of a polished, greedy co-host for the coveted gig, and instead wanted someone loyal and grateful. Who better to meet those standards than a Perkasie high school teacher of television production? The social-media-contest winner is reportedly in the running, and he will be invited back to test for the full-time job. After watching him in action, I get it. He’s humble, good looking, and a representation of the most important job we’ve got. Plus, it proves that the producers did some actual work to find him and that we don’t need to recycle the same, tired people in this fishbowl we call Hollywood. There’s also something about Ripa that thrives beside an unknown, rather than a long-time friend. It’s almost too familiar with someone like Andy Cohen or Anderson Cooper who, though qualified, are not the best choice. Watch a clip below, and decide for yourself.

Lady Gaga Performs “Million Reasons” on Howard Stern — Listen Now

I’ve been tough on Lady Gaga’s new album, ‘Joanne,’ but there’s no doubt that it’s peppered with powerful tracks, one of which is “Million Reasons,” which Gaga sang for Howard Stern in one of the best live performances I’ve heard on the show. According to Gaga, she wrote the song for women all over the world, and it’s origin can be attributed to finding a million reasons to leave a relationship, but being lured back by only one good reason to stay. We can all relate. In fact, Robin Quivers related so much she was crying at the end of the song. Listen below.

Singer-Songwriter Sean Hayes @ The Satellite on November 10

Independent singer-songwriter Sean Hayes‘ distinct, folksy sound caught my attention years ago, and I’ve been following him ever since. The San Francisco-based musician has toured with Ani DiFranco and the Cold War Kids, in addition to having his music featured on various television shows, films, and commercials. As the SF Weekly puts it, he “succeeds on the tension between warm, resonant soul and dirt-road folk, all laced with a wandering troubadour’s coo.” The genre-defying artist will bring his talents to Los Angeles at The Satellite on November 10, and you can catch the rest of his tour dates below. Check out the video of his latest album, ‘Low Light,’
