Jeremy Renner Won’t Fight for Women’s Salaries: Good for Him

There’s a mob mentality for most good deeds, and despite many actors’ desire to only promote their craft, they can’t seem to get away from the inevitable push to stand for something. Jeremy Renner is a rare breed of modern celebrity, avoiding the spotlight at all costs, unless of course that spotlight is shining on an actual scene.

When asked about his stance on Hollywood sexism and wage inequality, Renner quickly pivoted, saying, “I don’t know contracts and money and all that sort of stuff.” Many were angry, and his team quickly did damage control, explaining that while he cares, he simply said it’s not his job to determine payment. This isn’t the first time Renner’s feathers ruffled. He previously pounced on questions about his personal life, saying that the inquiry is akin to him looking through your underwear drawer, and it’s simply no one’s business.
While it’s nice to think that all A-listers should fight for a cause, it’s certainly not required, and the implication that it is is shrouded in hypocrisy, given that we are all capable of charitable endeavors that are not pursued. If he wants to act, let him act. And if you want the man to make a difference, perhaps you should also make one of your own.

Top 5 Most Disgruntled Television Stars

  1. KATHERINE HEIGL

KATHERINEHEIGL

Katherine Heigl’s professional plight takes many turns, beginning with her career-defining role on ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ Heigl had a hard time with the writing, and the creative differences caused her to remove her name from Emmy contention. She also took the side of co-star T.R Knight in his famous on-set feud with Isaiah Washington, followed by labeling the crew’s long hours as unfair. And if that wasn’t enough, she called her big-budget film, ‘Knocked Up’ “sexist.” Her shining star quickly dimmed and her career has yet to rebound.

2. ROB LOWE

robloweRob Lowe’s status as a Hollywood heartthrob has been more than complicated, with a series of well-known exits from Television’s top shows. Lowe left ‘The West Wing’ amid contentious contract negotiations, saying that everyone on the show received a raise except him. Though his account might be technically accurate, it’s missing some key components. Lowe’s salary started at a much higher number than his cast-mates, and despite their raise, they still didn’t catch up. Lowe wouldn’t take no for an answer, and he left the show.

3. DAVID CARUSO

carusoDavid Caruso’s career ended almost as quickly as it began when he capitulated to stardom in 1993’s NYPD Blue. After failing to receive the raise he wanted the following year, he left in a huff and pursued film, which fell flat fast. Caruso remained relatively unemployed until 2002, when he resurrected his leading-man status in ‘CSI: Miami.’

4. SHELLY LONG

Though Shelly Long won’t admit regret for her choice to leave ‘Cheers’ in its 1987 height, the media will do it for her. Rumor has it Long resembled her snooty Diane Chambers character and fancied herself a movie star. The show continued for six more seasons, with Kirstie Alley stepping in as Ted Danson’s love interest, and Long’s career never quite rebounded.

Dave Chappelle kicked his corporate gig to the curb and he left $50 million behind. Though some might suggest Comedy Central isn’t “corporate,” Chappelle would likely say otherwise, explaining that there were far too many suits interfering with his creative process, and the pressure became too much. He now lives in Ohio and has returned to his roots in stand-up comedy.

Florence Welch Debuts “Delilah” Video: A Different Kind of Danger

If Florence Welch was attempting to document her devastating nervous breakdown of recent note for her new “Delilah” video, she succeeded, Far removed from any fancy effects and chic outfits, Florence finds herself somewhat possessed in a hotel room, looking . . . weathered. It’s the latest video off Florence + The Machine’s ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’ record, and true to form — it’s catchy and captivating. Since her lyrics are less than literal, it’s hard to tell if this is a boy-crazed insanity, or she simply lost her marbles momentarily, but she’s “holding on for [someone’s] call”, whoever that might be and she’s “strung out for [his] love. Gwen Stefani Reveals “Used to Love You” In Strange Music Video

Forgive me for expecting a little more from Gwen Stefani than isolated face shots with uncomfortable acting. Perhaps she’s been in the monkey house too long and can no longer smell the shit, but this non-creative approach to her pain is more than a little awkward. And yes, I understand it’s SUPPOSED TO BE AWKWARD, but this simply does not work. It especially doesn’t work when those close up shots are covered in makeup, adding a less than vulnerable effect. If you’re going to bare your soul, be a little less concerned about your appearance. As for the melody and the lyrics, it’s average.

Playboy Magazine Bans Nude Photos – End of An Era

In a bid to keep up with the changing times and a new snap-happy market, Playboy Magazine has made the difficult decision to nix its naked photos in favor of more tasteful, covered pictures. With less than a million sales of it’s glossy mag compared to 8 million in the seventies, they’re finally adjusting to a changing market, where nude pics are now deemed passe given the digital revolution of overly accessible naked women. Though the move seems shocking, perhaps it makes sense. When Playboy covered up its online website, viewership drastically increased, presumably because people are no longer looking over their shoulder to see who’s snooping on their computer. Time will tell. Besides, don’t we only read Playboy for the articles anyhow?

Nicki Minaj v. NYT Mag: Doesn’t “Thrive on Drama”

Though I find Nicki Minaj to be excessively annoying, I must admit that if an interviewer asked if I “thrived on drama” I’d be equally pissed. Perhaps I would not have handled it quite the same way as her, but she’s Nicki Minaj, and she’s consistently established her inability to “make nice” in uncomfortable situations.
The trouble started when Minaj was asked about her Miley Cyrus feud in an interview with New York Times Magazine, and she made some very good points, explaining that since Cyrus appropriates black culture then she should also “want to know what affects us.” In defense of Cyrus, she did not dismiss the issues surrounding black culture; she instead addressed Minaj’s “unkind” attempts at expressing it. I realize the obvious response to that is “a privileged white girl has no business telling black women HOW to express themselves,” but that’s neither here nor there. The interview turned sour when Minaj was asked about her boyfriend’s feud with Drake, and she made it clear that they are grown men, and though it saddens her, she has nothing to do with it. That reply was met with the now infamous question about whether she “thrives on drama.” Here is her reply.

That’s the typical thing that women do. What did you putting me down right there do for you? Women blame women for things that have nothing to do with them. I really want to know why — as a matter of fact, I don’t. Can we move on, do you have anything else to ask? To put down a woman for something that men do, as if they’re children and I’m responsible, has nothing to do with you asking stupid questions, because you know that’s not just a stupid question. That’s a premeditated thing you just did.

If your question produces such a heated response to the point of losing the interview, then you have failed as an interviewer. Additionally, it was clearly an insult, and it deserved to be treated as one. Was her reply ironically “dramatic?” Perhaps. But don’t poke the bear if you don’t want to get eaten.
