There’s a reason smart women don’t have children, and it’s becoming increasing more obvious why that’s a sound decision in today’s economy. With household incomes dwindling, the stay-at-home parent is a thing of the past, and since the federal government isn’t providing paid maternity leave, new moms are left in a devastating lurch. Jon Oliver shined a light on the issue with a thorough piece on paid maternity leave, and it’s worth watching.
Tom Brokaw Addresses Brian Williams Scandal
Tom Brokaw took a moment to address the widespread speculation about his contentious relationship with Brian Williams with a standard, “Let the process play out” and “We always had a cordial relationship.” While it’s a nice soundbite from one of the last respected newscasters in history, it’s also expected. Brokaw has class, and he certainly won’t trash-talk Williams before he has all the information available. Furthermore, using the word cordial is a neutral way of saying, “Look I don’t like the guy, but I’m certainly not dancing on his career-grave while eating a spicy taco.” Watch below to see the revered newsman state his feelings.

Iris Apfel Promotes “Iris” Documentary at LACMA
Iris Apfel’s aesthetic eye and tireless energy is enviable and inspirational. Her starring role in a new documentary, ‘Iris,’ directed by the late Albert Maysles (‘Grey Gardens’, ‘Gimme Shelter’) is a hypnotic journey through her creative, improvisational process. The movie represents Iris in-the-now, rather than looking into much of her life story. As a result, the audience is gifted with an awe-inducing looking glass, and we feel as though Iris is our friend. In an after-the-show Q&A at LACMA, Iris confirmed her energetic spirit and keen eye, with a wow-worthy, vintage dress and entertaining one-liners, such as, “I’m not a feminist, I’m a person,” and “You’ll never get the Jackie O. story (in reference to her husband’s near-slip about the White House icon).” Watch the trailer below.
Sofia Vergara v. Nick Loeb: Embryo Battle Continues
Nick Loeb astounds me. While I respect one’s desire to bring an embryo to term once created, he signed a contract specifically stating that both parties must consent to that choice. The guy has now changed his mind, and he’s using Sofia’s career as a platform to publicly stomp his feet. Perhaps his attorney should have made different demands during the couple’s relationship. Furthermore, if it’s true that life begins at conception and those embryos are in fact a life, then the second Loeb agreed to place those lives in a freezer until the couple was ready to take further steps, he effectively froze his children! Vergara was very methodical when she began this process, and he should have been equally diligent. I find this fight quite curious, and I question his intent. Watch both sides of the argument below.

Kyle Jenner Fesses Up to Fake Pout
The irony of Khloe Kardashian’s insistence on authenticity in the clip below is that the entire family’s bread and butter surrounds what I believe to be a very fake ass, but who doesn’t love hypocrisy these days? As for whether it’s alarming that Kylie Jenner plumped her pout, I suppose every family has a different timeline for when it’s okay to sell sex, and the Jenner girls got in early. To be fair, I think it’s equally alarming to put your kids on a sitcom for the entirety of their childhood (see the Olsen twins), or to put a very young sister singing duo on a national television show to hawk their book (see Nashville). Watch below to see Kylie Jenner finally fess up.
The Avett Brothers and Brandi Carlile Stay on the Sunny Side
The Avett Brothers joined Brandi Carlile for Letterman’s last on-air days with a rendition of the Carter Family’s “Keep on the Sunny Side.” The folksy performance had me longing for a bit more of the Avett Brothers and less of Brandi, but the combination certainly struck my fancy. These creative choices are curious, given that any air-time during The Tonight’s Show send-off means Letterman holds the guest in high regard. And clearly Dave has good taste. Watch below.
Britney Spears Extends Her Vegas Show
Britney Spears ditched those sparkly duds in favor of a more flattering outfit, and her plunging neckline worked well with her cute bob and sad cast. Spears’ embarrassing ankle-twist set her show back, but lucky for fans she’s extending her Vegas stint for three more months. Watch below as the pop tart seems surprisingly relaxed in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. Spears is notorious for nail-biting, anxious answers, but this time she seemed calm. Perhaps a standing Q&A does the trick.
Sofia Vergara Talks to Howard Stern About Embryo Battle
Sofia Vergara visited Howard Stern and the Latin beauty boldly discussed some heated life topics, including her embryo battle with ex-fiance Nick Loeb, her quick courtship with ‘Magic Mike’s’ Joe Manganiello, and the many times her son was mistaken for her brother. Vergara swiftly addressed the Loeb drama, explaining that if her ex wanted a different outcome to their original arrangement, perhaps he should not have signed their contract (twice). Listen to the very funny interview below.
