Claire Danes Wins Homeland Golden Globe — Best Speech of the Night

Acceptance speeches at awards shows usually involve three solid minutes of dropping every big industry name the recipient can recall, likely in hopes of maintaining the relationships that keep the actor employed. It’s rare that those speeches have personal touches, but Danes pulled it off. She won for Homeland, and she cited the time fifteen years ago when she won for My So Called Life and she forgot to thank her parents, saying that she’s happy to have the opportunity to correct the error. Might I also add that she was the most deserving actress for that award? Her performance in Homeland is insanely fantastic. Watch her speech below.

Nicki Minaj & David Guetta Open the AMA’s — Ridiculous Performance

Remember in college when your friends went to that very loud club with the terrible music, got super-wasted, and insisted that they were having the time of their life? Let’s just say that Nicki Minaj’s performance at the American Music Awards brought back some of those painful memories. Does anyone just sing anymore? Is Lady Gaga responsible for these costume monstrosities? For goodness sakes, what was on Nicki Minaj’s ass during the opening of that song? If the show is called the ‘American Music Awards,’ then where is the real music? Watch below.

45th Annual CMA Awards — Fashion Smashion

Everyone knows that awards shows are just a great excuse to get a bunch of celebrities in a room together to massage each other’s ego. That being said, I love a pretty dress, so it only makes sense to post pictures from the country music awards. Click the “continue reading” link to see all the glam. Enjoy!

Eddie Murphy Resigns as Oscar Host — Follows Brett Ratner

I hope the Academy just learned a lesson about the ramifications of being puritanical hypocrites. Eddie Murphy predictably stepped down as Oscar host after learning that his friend, Brett Ratner, “resigned” as the show’s producer. The Academy likely fired Ratner without realizing the risk of losing Murphy. The Ratner debacle began with a series of loose-lipped interviews, most notably his quote that “rehearsal is for fags.” Had they fired Ratner immediately after he made the bigoted remark, I’d be fine with it. But that’s not why he was fired. Ratner was fired because of his candid Howard Stern interview, in which he detailed his sex life, including making Lindsay Lohan get an STD test prior to sleeping with her and being “in love with eating pus*y.” Though I detest Brett Ratner, there’s an underlying lesson to be learned here — you can use bigoted words, but you can’t openly discuss your sex life. You know . . . because that’s inappropriate. And despite my Ratner hatred, losing Murphy as a host should have been enough to keep Ratner. I predict a very boring Academy Awards this year.

Quote of the Day — Brett Ratner Steps Down As Oscar Producer

“Being asked to help put on the Oscar show was the proudest moment of my career. But as painful as this may be for me, it would be worse if my association with the show were to be a distraction from the Academy and the high ideals it represents.” Brett Ratner on stepping down from his post as producer of the Academy Awards, because — well . . . he’s a douchebag. And Brett — if you’re reading this, I have some advice. Treat those around you with a little respect and maybe you won’t be such a terrible person.

Did Beyonce Rip-Off Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s Choreography?

Beyonce sure gets accused of plagiarism a lot. The latest exercise of finger-pointing involves Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, who accused Beyonce of ripping off her ‘Rosas danst Rosas’ and ‘Achterland’ choreography for Beyonce’s ‘Countdown’ video. I’ve watched the comparisons, and it’s alarmingly similar. When addressing the controversy, the famed choreographer said:

I’m not mad, but this is plagiarism. This is stealing. What’s rude about it is that they don’t even bother about hiding it. They seem to think they could do it because it’s a famous work. When I saw the actual video, I was struck by the resemblance of Beyonce’s clip not only with the movements from Rosas danst Rosas but also with the costumes, the set and even the shots from the film by Thierry De Mey. There are protocols and consequences to such actions, and I can’t imagine she and her team are not aware of it.

I’d give Beyonce the benefit of the doubt, but this is a consistent accusation. Her performance at the 2010 Billboard Music Awards, for example, was a blatant rip-off of a Lorella Cuccarini performance. She avoided responsibility by saying she discovered Cuccarini from YouTube and she was “inspired.” And lets not forget that her very famous ‘Single Ladies’ choreography was “inspired” by Bob Fosse’s ‘Mexican Breakfast‘ routine. There’s a fine line between inspiration and plagiarism. Watch the clip below to see the similarity.

Eddie Murphy to Host the Oscars — Good Choice!

For years I’ve wondered what happened to Eddie Murhpy. He’s considered one of the greatest comedians in history, and he hasn’t done stand-up in years. So did he just get comfortable with his millions and lose the hunger to perform? As it turns out, Murphy is returning to the spotlight to host the Oscars, and presumably to promote his new film, ‘Tower Heist.’ I’m glad the Oscar executives learned a thing or two after last year’s hosting debacle. And though it pains me to admit that the douchey Brett Ratner might have done something right, the trailer for ‘Tower Heist’ looks really good. Watch below.

Adele Sings ‘Someone Like You’ at the VMA’s — Kills It!

The most painful reality of life is not getting to share it with our greatest love. For some kind of horrific, unexplainable reason, we don’t always get to be with our most powerful love, and only Adele could master this pain in her beautiful song, ‘Someone Like You.’ She wrote it after her relationship ended with “the love of her life,” and she later said she would “never forgive herself” for its failure. In the song, Adele imagines what it would be like to run into her ex years later, after having discovered he settled down with someone else, and she was still searching. There is quite possibly nothing worse. I’ve posted her chilling performance from the Video Music Awards below, and I dare you to listen to it without crying. I have to warn you though — if you just exited a relationship, you should probably refrain. In fact, I’m currently on hiatus from the entire album. It’s just too damn close to home.

Quote of the Day — Brooke Shields on her Tony Flub

“I think it was the first time in my career I messed up that royally,” she said. “I was beyond embarrassed. I wanted to give up show business. I fucked up. They counted me in wrong; the Teleprompter was wrong. I felt like I was having an aneurysm.” Brooke Shields on her meltdown at the Tony Awards.
