Jesse Williams Delivers Powerful Speech at BET Awards

JESSE WILLIAMS

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star and Advancement Project board member Jesse Williams took the stage at the BET Awards to deliver a powerful speech while accepting the honor for humanitarian of the year. The former public school teacher of American, African and African-American History said the award was for “the real organizers all over the country. The activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers of students that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do. He also asked that those with “no interest in equal rights for black people” avoid “suggestions to those who do.” He ended his speech with perhaps the most powerful point, saying, “We’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment . . . ghettoizing and demeaning our creations, then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit.”

It’s worth nothing Williams’ non-confrontational, poignant delivery.  This is probably the best speech I’ve heard in some time. It’s powerful, yet non-divisive. To see it in it’s entirety, click HERE.

Blake Lively: Hollywood’s Best Promotional Tool?

Perhaps Blake Lively’s pregnancy is also good for her temperament, because the former ‘Gossip Girl’ star is killing it on her press tour for ‘The Shallows.’ And it’s paying off. The movie is considered a “sleeper hit” and has already doubled it’s predicted intake. Should this be a lesson to actresses everywhere? Watch some of her best interviews below. You can’t help but root for her success.

Stephanie Seymour v. Kendall Jenner: Supermodel Showdown

When Stephanie Seymour called Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid  “bitches of the moment,” Kendall didn’t take it kindly, nor did Gigi’s mother, Yolanda Hadid. According to Kendall, Seymour is a “cyber bully” who should empower the new guard, rather than tearing them down. But this begs a larger question. What exactly is a “supermodel” and is Kendall actually on the list?

First, attaching the word “super” in front of “model” is a ridiculous trend that somehow stuck, and if you disagree, take a moment to put it in front of other professions. How about “superdentist” or “superaccountant” or “superlawyer.” It’s a coined, immature replacement for “top ten.” And if these girls are in fact the “bitches of the moment,” is that a bad thing? We could say the same about anyone in their prime. If the objection is to having a reputable family to pave your path, I’d argue that connections exist in every industry, and no one objects to the Hustons, the Barrymores, or the Fondas.

The only decent argument I’ve heard thus far was made by Rebecca Romijn, who said that social media status does not predict the ability to sell clothes. She also astutely argued that the industry should be in front of celebrity, rather than behind it. If models are fielded through an Instagram following, for example, and musicians are fielded through YouTube clicks, then is anyone doing any actual work prior to the public’s response? In short, it’s lazy vetting. Perhaps Kendall’s strong reaction to Seymour’s dig is a punishment that did not fit the crime, but the old guard better get on board. It’s a new game, and if you can’t play it, you will lose.

Allure Interview: Is Zoe Saldana “Difficult”?

zoe-saldana-allure-july-2016-cover

I’m all for women speaking up, but the movement for equality is sometimes an excuse to justify bad behavior. Such might be the case with Zoe Saldana, who previously enraged me for her complaints about a big movie studio who refused to pay for her nanny. According to Saldana, “you’re going to make [her] work a lot more hours than [she] usually would if she was home. Therefore, [she] would have to pay for this nanny for more hours . . . ” It’s one thing to fight for a change in legislation, but at the very least, acknowledge that every other working mother in America is forced to figure it out, and you get paid far more than others for more options. She also complained about executives who thought of replacing her on a project due to her pregnancy. She was bothered that she was finally in love and starting a family and it “messed up their schedule.” Again, this is a business. If you cannot physically perform because of your pregnancy and production is delayed, that is costly. To complain about it is understandable.

In her new interview with Allure, she’s at it again. Of her difficult reputation, she said, “I was told walking into this project that they really wanted me for the part, and that any input or ideas I had to please share them. That’s what I was doing, and this producer was so bothered by the fact that he had to disrupt his vacation to call me and tell me to stop being a difficult bitch. I thought, Wow, it’s real. It really happens.” Though I can understand the blanket statements about sexism and the idea that a woman is not allowed to speak her mind, this feels more like a kind platitude from a producer that was pounced on by Saldana. Writers and producers don’t generally want their actors making notes on their script. It is annoying. In fact, Quentin Tarantino once told Howard Stern that he expects his actors to know his script word for word. Improvising is not allowed. Samuel L. Jackson confirmed this in a subsequent interview, and said his relationship with Tarantino has finally evolved to the point of making notes.

I understand gender inequality and I support change. But some people are just . . . difficult.

Kim Kardashian Takes Aim at Taylor Swift

There are two takes on Taylor Swift. One is that she’s a sweet, shrewd ingenue with a sincere heart, and the other is that she’s a calculated mastermind that has carefully choreographed every stage of her career, even the ones that seemed unplanned. She fought Apple on behalf of indie music artists, for example, and she was praised for her brazen letter to the behemoth. KIM KARDASHIAN GQ NAKED Apple “folded,” and she signed an exclusive deal with the company shortly thereafter. But the timing was a little too close for comfort, and music industry insiders whispered that perhaps the entire event was staged, because these contracts usually take far more time than a few days. As for her Calvin Harris breakup, just when I thought his team might have trumped young Taylor with carefully placed leaks about how the DJ got “bored” with the star and she was some weepy woman begging for a ring, Swift was spotted kissing Tom Hiddleston on a public beach. It goes without saying that she won, and it also goes without saying that if you go up against the Swift machine, you don’t stand a chance. Harris learned that the hard way. But what happens when your war is with Kim Kardashian, whose ass can “break the internet,” and whose image is far different from Swift’s? It’s as if a Kangaroo and an eagle are fighting. It just feels . . . odd.

When Kanye West took a swipe at Swift in a lyric for his new album, ‘The Life of Pablo,’ claiming to have “made that b-ch famous,” Swift hit back during her Grammy speech. Kim wasn’t pleased, and both her and Kanye have long held that he requested permission for the line, and it was granted. See below:

Kim says Taylor’s deep emotional wound is nonsense — okay, she says it’s a lie — and that there’s video proof, because a videographer was actually filming their phone call. Why? Because Kim’s husband commissions videographers to film everything when he’s recording an album, for posterity (and possibly, one day, a documentary). And this is where it gets sticky.

“She totally approved that,” Kim says, shaking her head in annoyance. “She totally knew that that was coming out. She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn’t. I swear, my husband gets so much shit for things [when] he really was doing proper protocol and even called to get it approved.”

… Swift, Kim insists, “totally gave the okay. Rick Rubin was there. So many respected people in the music business heard that [conversation] and knew. I mean, he’s called me a bitch in his songs. That’s just, like, what they say. I never once think,[gasping] ‘What a derogatory word! How dare he?’ Not in a million years. I don’t know why she just, you know, flipped all of a sudden.… It was funny because [on the call with Kanye, Taylor] said, ‘When I get on the Grammy red carpet, all the media is going to think that I’m so against this, and I’ll just laugh and say, ‘The joke’s on you, guys. I was in on it the whole time.’ And I’m like, wait, but [in] your Grammy speech, you completely dissed my husband just to play the victim again.”

Swift’s team responded, saying:

“Taylor does not hold anything against Kim Kardashian as she recognizes the pressure Kim must be under and that she is only repeating what she has been told by Kanye West. However, that does not change the fact that much of what Kim is saying is incorrect. Kanye West and Taylor only spoke once on the phone while she was on vacation with her family in January of 2016 and they have never spoken since. Taylor has never denied that conversation took place. It was on that phone call that Kanye West also asked her to release the song on her Twitter account, which she declined to do. Kanye West never told Taylor he was going to use the term ‘that bitch’ in referencing her. A song cannot be approved if it was never heard. Kanye West never played the song for Taylor Swift. Taylor heard it for the first time when everyone else did and was humiliated. Kim Kardashian’s claim that Taylor and her team were aware of being recorded is not true, and Taylor cannot understand why Kanye West, and now Kim Kardashian, will not just leave her alone.”

So who’s telling the truth? That’s up for you to decide, but perhaps it lies somewhere in the middle. My guess? Taylor knew more than she let on, but perhaps not the entirety of the song. That being said, she’s humorless, and the line in question is pretty tame. I also take issue with the implication that Kim Kardashian is under her husband’s spell and therefore forced to take his side. It’s anti-woman, and I expect more from Team Swift.

Taylor Swift Spotted Kissing Tom Hiddleston — Calvin Who?

CALVIN HARRIS TAYLOR SWIFT

Taylor Swift once said that she “went out on a normal amount of dates in my early 20s,” and “got absolutely slaughtered for it.” As a result, she chose not to date for two and a half years. Things changed when she met Calvin Harris, who she publicly dated for over a year only to recently end their relationship because “Calvin got bored,” according to strategically placed sources on his team. And while you might have thought Swift would once again be unfairly painted as the heartbroken girl in need of a hug . . . think again. Swift was recently pictured kissing Tom Hiddleston, which is not surprising considering their adorkable dance-off at the Met Gala. Translation? You go, girl. As for Harris and his low-blow leaks, YOU LOST.

Ed O’Neill Didn’t Recognize Britney Spears

ed_oneill_britney

Celebrities are often asked to take photographs for social media and some, like Louis C.K., will refuse. Others will simply comply with a curmudgeon attitude, which seems to be the method of ‘Modern Family’ star Ed O’Neill. To be fair, he was catching a flight and his irritated resting face is what we love about him. Watch as he retells a very funny story about learning it was Britney Spears who asked to take the photo.

#Curb Your Enthusiasm Returns to HBO

CURB PERSPECTIVE

Fans of HBO’s most beloved show can breathe a big sigh of relief today because Larry David will return with the ninth season of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’ No other details have been divulged, but David is notorious for his ebb-and-flow excitement for his signature show, signing one year contracts each year for fear he won’t be in the mood to return. He leaves even his actors in the dark, who often inquire as to whether they should keep their schedule open for a possible return. When asked what motivated his decision, David said, “In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, ‘I left, I did nothing, I returned.’” Here’s to another season of David’s socially awkward antics.
