Melissa Rivers on #ASKHERMORE — Keep it in Perspective

Melissa Rivers visited Huffington Post to promote her new Book of Joan, and she confirmed my long held belief that actresses take themselves too seriously. While I certainly support equal pay for women, the dramatic cries about gender double standards during Hollywood interviews is a little extreme. Men receive the same invasive questions about their personal life (see Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Justin Bieber, Robert Pattinson, and many more), and they certainly are not asked about hot-button political issues while walking the red carpet. As for the infamous “mani-cam,” I’d say that’s more of a gooey gimmick than sexist shtick. Watch Melissa Rivers explain that if celebrities don’t want to get asked who they are wearing, then perhaps they should pay for their dress and forgo the free loan.

Gwyneth Paltrow on Howard Stern: Talks Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, & Chris Martin

Gwyneth Paltrow’s PR team just scored a major win with her appearance on Howard Stern, because the notoriously uptight A-lister finally let her hair down for a revealing, fun chat. Paltrow discussed her famous power-couple pairings with ease, telling Stern about her relationships with Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, and Chris Martin, Amongst the enlightening revelations were Paltrow’s declaration that Pitt was “too good for her,” Affleck was “not in a good place in his life,” and Martin is still a great friend. She also reflected on her close relationship with her father and her dad’s devastation over her Brad breakup. Listen to a very entertaining hour below.

‘The Counselor’ — A Full Review

20131025-103515.jpgWhen you eliminate the back-story behind your characters, you also eliminate my investment in their journey. The lines between the good guys and the bad guys become blurred, and the performances suddenly become irrelevant. It’s a shame too, because this film was certainly saturated with powerful performances.

Directed by Ridley Scott and written by Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men), The Counselor follows a lawyer (Michael Fassbender) who, in a bid for big bucks, engages in a drug deal with the very shady Reiner (Javier Barden) and Westray (Brad Pitt). Things predictably go awry, and some very dark drama ensues.

Though I’d call this a visually artistic masterpiece, that’s not enough to rescue it. In film school, there’s a cardinal rule that every scene in a movie should propel the plot forward. I thought of that while watching The Counselor, and then quickly realized that there’s no plot to propel. There’s no indication about why Fassbender’s character chose to engage in this drug deal, and because his cronies are also vapid villains, there’s also no suspense associated with their safety. Do I care about the life of a seemingly evil group of people who I know nothing about? Does it matter if their lives are destroyed? The only saving grace is Penelope Cruz’s character, but much like the others, I found myself judging a woman who would be with such a creepy guy without any suspicion.

Vintage Interview: Nicole Kidman on Tom Cruise Divorce

Divorce is hard enough, but public divorces are presumably even harder. That being said, they do provide for some timeless zingers that are worth reliving. Aside from Jennifer Aniston’s claim that Brad Pitt was missing his “sensitivity chip,” this one takes the cake. Watch Nicole Kidman tell David Letterman that she can “wear heels now.”

Quote of the Day — Mike Tyson on Robin Givens & Brad Pitt

“I was doing a divorce but I – we – every day, before I would go to my lawyer’s office to say she’s a pig and stealing, I would go to…her house to have sex with her. This particular day, someone beat me to the punch. And I guess Brad got there earlier than I did.” Bensinger asks Tyson about his reaction: “I was mad as hell. I was going to…You should have saw his face when he saw me.” Mike Tyson recounts a very entertaining story about his ex-wife to Graham Bensinger.
