Team Swift. v. Team Harris: Songwriting Feud Surfaces

Team Swift just took down Calvin Harris with a riveting revelation, and Harris is making a meager attempt to fight back. TMZ broke the news that Rihanna’s hit new song, “This is What You Came For,” was in fact written by Swift, not Harris, and the once-secret fact was in retaliation for Harris trashing Swift as a cheater in the press. TMZ furthered that Swift has the rights to revoke the song, but she won’t, unlike Harris, who prevented Rita Ora from singing his song post-breakup. Harris said that while Taylor wrote the lyrics, he wrote the music, and it’s unfair to suggest otherwise. He also encourages her to focus on her new relationship with Tom Hiddleston.

I hope Calvin Harris learned a lesson here. First, HE STARTED IT. He is the one who initially said he got “bored” of their relationship and simply wasn’t “feeling the spark anymore.” He is the one who leaked the fact that HE dumped HER, which would once again circulate the image of a sad single girl who can’t keep a man. If you’re going to play, bring your gloves. Don’t get hit in the face and then baby-cry about how you’ve been had. Listen to the song in question below. It’s good.

Jordan Rodgers Reveals Relationship With Brother Aaron

Many have long suspected a rift between ‘The Bachelorette’s’ Jordan Rodgers and his brother, NFL star Aaron Rodgers, and some have attributed it to Aaron and Olivia’s friendship with Jordan’s ex-girlfriend, with whom he allegedly cheated on. On last night’s episode Jordan made it clear to JoJo that although he has a great relationship with his entire family, Aaron does not, and it’s just how Aaron chose to “do life.” As an aside, does anyone on this show have an actual job? Jennifer Lopez and Lin Manuel Miranda Release New Song

Jennifer Lopez and Lin Manuel Miranda visited the today show to perform “Love Make the World Go Round,” with the proceeds benefiting the people impacted by Orlando. According to Lopez, she approached Miranda after hearing his speech at the Tonys, and rightfully so. Miranda is the best part of the song. And though I love Jennifer Lopez’s bangin’ bod, perhaps this is not the forum for a sheer side-panel and bare midriff? Watch the performance below.

Lorne Michaels Visits ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’

The ever-elusive Lorne Michaels exercised his loyalty with Jerry Seinfeld when he made a special appearance on ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.’ It’s no secret that the ‘Saturday Night Live’ creator and producer has always been on the pulse of comedy, so the best part of the following clip is his question about Seinfeld’s format for the show. Something tells me Lorne does not approve, and perhaps rightfully so. The show is funny, but it’s not funny enough. Not for Lorne anyway.

Rose McGowan Defends Renee Zellweger

Aside from Rose McGowan’s arbitrary assault on Howard Stern, the actress made some serious sense when defending Renee Zellweger, who had her looks insulted by a writer for Variety. The original article, entitled, ‘Renee Zellweger: If She No Longer Looks Like Herself, Has She Become a Different Actress?” spurred a response from McGowan in an article for rival trade, The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “”You are an active endorser of what is tantamount to harassment and abuse of actresses and women. I speak as someone who was abused by Hollywood and by people like you in the media, but I’m a different breed, one they didn’t count on.” She furthered:

Renee Zellweger is a human being, with feelings, with a life, with love and with triumphs and struggles, just like the rest of us. How dare you use her as a punching bag in your mistaken attempt to make a mark at your new job. How dare you bully a woman who has done nothing but try to entertain people like you. Her crime, according to you, is growing older in a way you don’t approve of. Who are you to approve of anything? What you are doing is vile, damaging, stupid and cruel. It also reeks of status quo white-male privilege. So assured are you in your place in the firmament that is Hollywood, you felt it was OK to do this. And your editors atVariety felt this was more than OK to run.

As for the Howard Stern part, McGowan said, “I am someone who was forced by a studio to go on Howard Stern, where he asked me to show him my labia while my grinning male and female publicists stood to the side and did nothing to protect me.” First, I am a massive Stern fan, and he asks everyone about their genitals, male AND female. In fact, he’s so obsessed with the small size of his own penis, he often harasses men more than women about the size of their privates. As for the rest, it’s important to note that commenting on the looks of anyone is ridiculous. It has nothing to do with the movie part, and the uproar over Zellweger’s looks is extremely exaggerated. If an actress has had such extensive plastic surgery that she is no longer recognizable, it MIGHT be worth mentioning, but writing an entire article about it is tantamount to bullying and it’s only purpose is to go viral. Lastly, does Rose McGowan have a podcast? She needs one.

Justin Timberlake Apologizes Over BET Awards Tweet

TimberlakeWhen Justin Timberlake was called a hypocrite for praising Jesse Williams’ speech at the BET Awards, his response landed him in hot water. Timberlake said, “Oh, you sweet soul. The more you realize that we are the same, the more we can have a conversation. Bye.” When followers rightfully pointed out that the Williams’ point was that we are not in fact the same, Timberlake said he feels “misunderstood” and he “responded to a specific tweet that wasn’t meant to be a general response.”

One of Williams’ points was about cultural appropriation, with the star saying that white people are “extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment . . . ghettoizing and demeaning our creations, then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit.” Timberlake has long been accused of cultural appropriation, hence the hypocrisy of his support. Followers have said that more talented black R&B singers don’t get the same credit as the white superstar. They also pointed to his notorious Super Bowl performance with Janet Jackson, which resulted in her career suffering while his thrived.

It would be impossible to cite every example of cultural appropriation, because it’s endless. It’s no secret that just about all of what’s “cool” in white culture began with black culture, and we’ve consistently taken credit. For an easy, fun example of this, read this Buzzfeed article, entitled, “Vogue Thinks White People Invented the Big Booty Trend.” To quote “Hunger Games” actress Amandla Stenberg, “What would America be like if we loved black people as much as we loved black culture?”

While Justin Timberlake is a scapegoat for a larger issue, it goes without saying that he should perhaps be more in tune with the times, so as not to land in hot water. Twitter isn’t the problem, he is. But I am sure his intentions were pure, and it’s important to educate people, not bully them.

‘The Shallows’ – A Full Review

THE SHALLOWS BLAKE LIVELY

It’s widely known that a beautiful girl in a bikini is bound to draw eyes, but for a movie to work, there’s has to be more than just the superficial. Blake Lively proved her leading-lady prowess with a powerful performance in ‘The Shallows,” where she fights off a shark with her medical knowledge, creative ideas, and will to survive.  It takes talent to hold an audience for that long, especially with no dialogue to distract, and she does just that.

The film begins with minimal backstory about Nancy (Blake Lively), who journeys to a secret beach to surf after dropping out of medical school. Her mother died of cancer, and she visited the beach while pregnant with Nancy. Her friend stayed home, and she dangerously decides to surf in solitude. But a shark is circling the water thanks to a whale carcass, and he’s VERY interested in Nancy. I won’t ruin the film with further details, but let’s just say the writer did a great job with some serious MacGyver moves.

It’s worth noting that the story begins and ends on that beach. There was a key decision made by the director to exclude the worrying scenes of Nancy’s family and friends, so the audience is just as unsure about the potential for rescue. And while it’s certainly a thriller, it’s colorful and refreshing, with awe-inducing shots of a beach in Lord Howe Island, which is located in New South Wales.

Though no one is breaking ground here, it’s a good enough summer flick that will keep you engaged. It’s also refreshing to know a movie can be made at minimal cost these days. The movie opened with a better-than-expected $16 million, thereby making back its budget in one weekend.

DISH RATING: 4/5
