Celebrity Look-Alikes: Tony Curtis and Ray Liotta

I’ve learned a couple of things about Tony Curtis since his recent death.  First, I learned he’s Jamie Lee Curtis’ father (which I am embarrassed to admit I never knew).  Second, I learned that he bears a striking resemblance to Ray Liotta.  Sure I’m bad at the look-alike game, but I’ve Googled this one and at least three people on the internet agree.  That counts for something!  If you have never seen a Tony Curtis movie, I would encourage you to rent Some Like it Hot.

UPDATE: Roger Ebert wrote a very beautiful tribute to Tony Curtis on his website.  Here’s my favorite line: “The thing about Curtis was, here was a truly great star, a legend, who had a big libido but not a big ego.”

Outrage over Will.i.am’s VMA Blackface — I’m Confused

Will.i.am is receiving a lot of heat for his VMA performance, where he appeared in blackface while performing with Nicki Minaj.  Personally, I thought Nicki Minaj’s ridiculous purple outfit was more offensive than Will.i.am’s blackface, but that’s neither here nor there.  Let me begin by explaining that I don’t usually defend Will.i.am, because he’s generally pompous in interviews, but I’ll make an exception this time around.  Blackface is offensive because of it’s history in vaudeville and minstrel, where white men painted their face black, and danced around the stage making fun of black people.  To my knowledge, it did not involve black men painting their face black and dancing around the stage making fun of black people.  Got that?  I realize that it’s a double standard to say that something is insulting when a white person does it, but it isn’t insulting when a black person does it.  But that brings me to the brilliant Chris Rock quote below for your reading pleasure.  After you read it, I believe my point will be pretty clear.

‘I get white guys complaining that I get to use the word “nigger.” Well last time I checked, that was the only advantage I had. You want to trade places?’ he offers to a white man in the audience. ‘You get up here and scream “nigger” and I’ll raise interest rates. Because even if you don’t personally run the world, the people who run the world look pretty much like you.’

Celebrity Look-Alikes: George Clooney and Carey Grant

I’ve often said that George Clooney is the Cary Grant of today’s generation. Not only do they look alike, but their careers as leading men are also similar. The only main difference between their resumes, is that Carey Grant wasn’t afraid of romantic comedies. Grant was owned by Paramount Pictures though (and later by Columbia Pictures), at a time when the big studios held the power in Hollywood. Now, the actors hold the power, and they get to decide what their next project will be.  That means that actors like Clooney can pick and choose as they please, and don’t have to act in every film produced by the studio, with whom they were under contract.  I cannot decide whether that’s good or bad, but I wonder if Clooney would have turned down a film like Bringing up Baby.  Perhaps Hollywood isn’t even making those films anymore — I certainly haven’t seen any.  If actors hold the power though, maybe they should start reading scripts to find the next His Girl Friday.  After all, someone has to do the studio’s job.

South Park Predicted the Mel Gibson Meltdown

Who knew the folks over at South Park were so ahead of their time?  Actually, I think everyone knew that.  Back in 2004, shortly after Passion of the Christ, South Park dedicated an episode to Mel Gibson’s insanity.  With Radar Online’s release of the Mel Gibson tapes, it’s only fitting to play a clip from South Park so that they get a little credit.  Watch below.

Justin Long and Drew Barrymore’s New Movie: ‘Going the Distance’

Have they even confirmed that they are in a relationship yet?  Anyways, real life lovebirds Drew Barrymore and Justin Long star in a new movie about long distance relationships and the trailer looks . . . eh.  My experience with romantic comedies though, is that bad trailer = good movie and good trailer = bad movie.  Got it?  Watch the trailer below and start making predictions.

People Magazine v. Us Magazine: Who Ripped Who Off?

I’m not sure which magazine you will buy this weekend, considering they are exactly the same!  I realize that all of the tabloids are covering Sandra Bullock, but Us Magazine and People Magazine pretty much have the exact same cover, right down to the picture of Sandra Bullock.  How is it possible that out of all the Sandra Bullock pictures out there, the two leading magazines picked the same one?  Someone is guilty, and I want to know who it is.  Even the color choices are the same!  Click on the links below and judge for yourself.  As an aside, this issue was addressed in the film ’13 Going on 30′ once, and the magazine names were changed for the film.  Fast forward to the 3:30 mark in the clip below to see what I am talking about.

Oscar Ambush: Elinor Burkett Crashes the Stage

If you watched the Oscars, you might have noticed a very odd woman’s acceptance speech for Best Documentary Short. Here’s the story: ‘Music By Prudence’ is a documentary directed by Roger Ross Williams. Elinor Burkett was originally a producer on the film, but she was sacked due to “creative differences.” Because she had already done some work on the film prior to being sacked, the Academy had to give her a producer credit. At the time of the Oscars, she and Roger Ross Williams were no longer speaking. Technically, only one person was supposed to give an acceptance speech for the film. It’s not clear if it was decided in advance by the Academy that Williams would give the speech. However, Williams sprinted to the stage first and began his speech. He was then ambushed by Burkett. Burkett claims that Williams’ mother tried to trip her with a cane so that she could not reach the stage. Insane. Watch the moment ensue below.
