‘The Good Wife’ Series Finale – My Full Review

the-good-wife

It’s tough to end a television show, and when the creators and writers have long been tied to their characters, there’s a difficult balance between pleasing the audience and keeping one’s creative vision intact. ‘The Good Wife’ finale solidified that sad fact with its sub-par last episode, and the audience erupted in rage. In short, she didn’t get the guy, she left her husband, and she got a hard, literal slap in the face from her counterpart, who she arguably crossed for her own benefit. Did she learn anything or find any sense of real happiness along the way? I’d say no, but at least her long lost love made a post-mortem return in a fantasy scene, and we all got to say goodbye to the beloved Will Gardner (Josh Charles).

While I like the idea of a woman having a “happy ending” that is not dependent on a man, there was no happy ending for Alicia. I found an interview with the creators and listened to their cerebral explanation of the episode’s events, and I can only say that they have lived too long with these characters and lost sight of the big picture. According to Robert King and Michelle King, Alicia’s journey began and ended with a “slap,” the first for her husband and the last for her, as she slowly became the corrupt person that she resented in episode one (i.e. her husband). She looks ahead to the future and marches on sans man, and Jason Crouse (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has disappeared for a less complicated life.

As a lawyer, I resent the notion that zealous representation is corrupt, and I also resent the idea that Alicia’s sense of morality is somehow inversely tied to her ability to advocate for her clients. I believe she became a strong, no-nonsense individual that finally fought for what she wanted in life (a job, a divorce, and a decent love life), and she was not rewarded for any of those revelations. She was punished. It’s no one’s fault, though. Writers and creators just cannot adequately end television shows.

Katherine Heigl Clears Her Image On Howard Stern

Katherine_heigl

I’ve been very hard on Katherine Heigl over the years, which may or may not be fair, because I’m guessing she didn’t need another blogger bashing her during that time. There’s no need to rehash what landed her on the Hollywood shit-list, but in case you’re wondering, click HERE. Though Heigl has tried to correct her cantankerous image, she’s failed to fully reform in the public eye, UNTIL NOW. Heigl visited the Howard Stern show, and the format allowed her to adequately explain herself absent sound bites. For the first time in history, I finally understand her intentions. Here’s a rundown.

In response to that infamous comment about ‘Knocked Up’ being “sexist.”

Heigl said that though she liked the film, she personally felt her character was judgmental and unlikable. That doesn’t mean she took issue with the writing, she just would not personally hangout with the uptight chick she played. She might not have ever said that out loud, but she was somewhat when a Vanity Fair interviewer asked her to respond to the idea that the film was sexist (as in, the men are cool and the women are nags). Since she’s obviously not good at navigating controversial comments, she stepped in it. And Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen have yet to forgive her.

In response to removing her name out of Emmy contention.

Heigl rose to fame on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ but there was a slow year for her character, and when asked to sift through her material to find something worthy of submitting to the Emmys, she simply felt she didn’t have a deep enough performance to compete. Though she didn’t think anyone would notice, they did, and when asked about it, she stepped in it again. She admits to apologizing to Shonda Rhimes. She also explained that the nature of an ensemble cast is difficult, because with 7 series regulars, everyone wants their time to shine.

Is she difficult to work with?

She doesn’t think so, but she’s so concerned about her image, she’s lost her “voice,” and she’s constantly baited by interviewers to give them something juicy or “f-ck up,” as Heigl puts it. In fact, her shoes once fit too tight, and she didn’t say anything for fear of fanning the fire.

And there you have it. Let this be a lesson to anyone in hot water. If you want to clear your name, go on Howard Stern.

Michael Strahan is Leaving Kelly Ripa for GMA

live-with-kelly-and-michael-large-643x441If there’s anyone in the entertainment industry worthy of accolades, it’s Kelly Ripa. The former actress pivoted her soap opera career to an impressive co-starring role beside the beloved Regis Philbin during a time when many suggested that Kathy Lee Gifford was an indispensable partner in crime. And Ripa didn’t let her new role stop her personal life, because she quickly popped out three children with longtime love Mark Consuelos and proudly celebrated her bump on television. While many implied the show could not survive Philbin’s exit, Ripa soared, carrying her rotating co-stars through each episode, which gave the network enough time to find a sufficient replacement for Regis. In fact, the ratings increased. Many articles suggest that the format of ‘Live With Kelly and Michael’ might be responsible for its stellar ratings amidst co-host swaps, but that undermines the true source of the strength, which is Kelly. And though she might play coy, she’s a shrewd talent that knows exactly how to steer her ship. And it is HER ship.

When Michael Strahan announced his departure from Live With Kelly and Michael, it came as a shock to both the public and Kelly herself. GMA is apparently struggling, and Strahan fulfills a target demographic. Because their revenue totals over $300 million per year, they can afford what I can only perceive is a hefty pay raise for the former football star. Strahan is certainly talented and worthy of poaching, but I can’t help but wonder how well he’ll do without Ripa by his side. She should not be concerned, though. This is familiar territory, and she’s a titan.

Iggy Azalea Discusses Cheating Scandal With Ellen

iggy_ellen

If I were advising Iggy Azalea in any PR related capacity, I’d tell her to only do interviews, because she is far more likable on television than she is on twitter, which has landed her in some serious hot water in rant-related posts of the past. While recently visiting Ellen, Azalea addressed the buzz about her relationship with Nick Young, who is rumored to have cheated on her after a video came to light of an alleged confession via his disloyal teammate. I saw said video (yes, I’m ashamed), and it’s not quite clear from its content that it’s an admission of guilt. Furthermore, when a private video becomes public, it’s no one’s business, and Azalea should not be forced to comment in any capacity. Having said that, she handled the inquiry with grace and just the right amount of evasion. And kudos to the singer for copping to her plastic surgery. As for Ellen, it’s time for the host to drop the “I don’t read the tabloids, but I’m going to ask you a tabloid-related question that my team reluctantly fed to me” act. If you’re against rag mags, then don’t ask rag-mag related questions. Because that means you’re either unprepared for your job or a gigantic hypocrite.

Khloe Kardashian Attacks Kris Humphries . . . Again

khloe-kardashian-800

It’s become pretty standard for anyone with a modicum of fame to call upon their high-level friends to make special appearances on their sub-par shows, and Khloe Kardashian and Snoop are no exception. Sure Snoop has talent, but not in a talk-show medium, and none of the Kardashian clan has had any success in a solo venture. Kendall has, but she’s a model with an actual skill and a different last name. So when Snoop asked Khloe to appear on his web series, she kindly complied in return for his guest spot on her now-cancelled FYI television show. Khloe has over-saturated the talk-show circuit with the same repetitive sound bites, but this time around she took an interesting swipe at Kris Humphries, revealing that she boldly told Kim not to marry such a “loser.” Watch below.

Mariah Carey v. Jennifer Lopez: Timeline of a Feud

JLO MARIAH

Despite my consistent digs at Mariah Carey, I’m a longtime fan, and I remember the original Mariah as a down-to-earth girl from New York that was in over her head in an unhealthy marriage, which simultaneously shackled her creativity. As soon as it ended, her real personality came through, and she became ever-the-more likable. Then . . . something changed. My guess is that the superstar could not adjust to the changing tide of social media, and she might also have thin skin. Her fashion choices stayed stagnant in over-the-top, glamorous gowns and her attempt to brush-off controversial questions resulted in an out-of-touch hand waves with excessive “Dah-Lings.” And for some time, that was Jennifer Lopez’s problem too. Anyone who has been in this business for over a decade is well aware of the drama that surrounded Lopez’s original team and their untouchable diva demands, which were often unknown by Lopez herself. She admits to making serious adjustments, and the impressive about-face was shockingly effective. After all, if her career can survive that Bennifer debacle, it can survive just about anything. So why did Lopez change and Mariah didn’t? Again, my guess is she cannot accept criticism, and in a recent on-the-street interview, she once again took aim at Lopez. As it turns out, Mariah might have reason to resent Lopez, but you’d never know it from her limited explanations, and as far as the public’s concerned, she just seems mean spirited. Here’s a timeline of their feud, and the reasons behind it.

2001: Jennifer Lopez allegedly stole Mariah Carey’s idea to sample Yellow Magic Orchestra’s “Firecracker” for JLO’s hit song “I’m Real.” Mariah had planned to use the song for “Loverboy,” but Lopez beat her to the punch. Rumor has it Carey’s ex-husband Tommy Mottola got wind of Mariah’s plan and orchestrated the theft for Lopez, who was his artist at the time.

2002: When asked about the stolen sample, Mariah said, “Let’s just say they did me a favor. And they know who they are. And thank you, sweetie. And your friend who did it with you!” Sources suggest that the “sweetie” in question is Jennifer Lopez, and the shady business gave Carey leverage to make an early exit from her Sony contract, which resulted in a huge new contract with EMI/Virgin.

2008: In an interview with a German television show, Mariah sang the praises of Beyonce, but when asked about Jennifer, she infamously said, “I don’t know her.”

2015: Mariah explains she was “just being honest,” and really doesn’t know Jennifer Lopez

2016: Mariah “Still doesn’t know Jennifer Lopez”

2016: Jennifer Lopez visits Watch What Happens Live and won’t take Andy Cohen’s bait. She continued to deny any ill-feelings toward Mariah.

Tyler Henry Disgustingly Uses Robin Williams to Promote His Terrible Show

medium
I’ve heard of using celebrities to promote sub-par television shows in need of a jolt, but using a dead celebrity to do your dirty work? Now that’s just plain disgusting. In the video below you’ll see creepy man-child Tyler Henry do a “reading” with Margaret Cho in which Robin Williams “comes through.”. Tyler also had Brittany Murphy come through for Jamie Pressly in a previous episode.

Let’s assume for argument’s sake that those who have passed on would in fact make contact with their living loved ones to send a message via a medium. Don’t you think Robin Williams would do that for his family and children, and not Margaret Cho? And what about Brittany Murphy? You’re telling me she will reach out beyond the grave to Pressly, with whom she had zero contact with in the years leading up to her death? To say I’m outraged by this format is a complete understatement. Plus, the kid isn’t even good at this. Watch below after the jump.
