X Factor Gets Axed — Sayonara Simon!

X FACTOR SIMON COWELLWhen Simon exited American Idol to launch X Factor, I assumed American Idol was doomed. I based this assumption on empirical evidence from the UK, which saw the demise of Pop Idol immediately after Cowell created X Factor, a move that ultimately resulted in a lawsuit with his former friend, Simon Fuller, who rightfully (in my opinion), claimed that Cowell stole Fuller’s format to launch his competing show. But I spoke toO soon.

When I wrote my original prediction, I had yet to watch X Factor, and from the moment it began I knew it would fail in the United States. First, the format was dated. The cheesy backup dancers barely work for major stars, let alone amateurs. Additionally, Simon Cowell’s personal investment in the show skewed his objectivity, and he traded his signature barbs for sappy critiques that served only to make the show feel fraudulent. He attempted to assuage the show’s format issues with beautiful women as judges, a move that might also work more abroad than domestic. Us American’s know a sideshow when we see it, and if you don’t hire someone with inside experience, all else will fail. To be fair, he did hire L.A. Reid, but unlike Harry Connick Jr., Reid was unable to articulate the intricate issues with each contestant, therefore never fully exposing the extent of his industry experience.

It’s unfortunate that X Factor failed, but with The Voice’s very fresh format and American Idol’s historical brand, it’s impossible to compete. And given Cowell’s recent popularity decline, his personality isn’t enough to save a sinking ship. That being said, I’m sure the guy is crying in a big pile of money. It was fun while it lasted.

Vintage Video Pick: Heart Performs ‘Stairway to Heaven’

After some very powerful prodding from one of my parental units, I finally watched Heart perform Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ And judging by the 10 million view count, it appears I’m the last to look. Better late than never I suppose. The Honors took place in December, 2012, and included the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. Of their pressure-packed performance, Ann and Nancy Wilson said, “that’s not an easy song,” and they were pleased when the surviving members found them after the show to express their gratitude. Watch below to see a little piece of history.

Tim McGraw sets out for the Southland — Sundown Heaven Tour

TIMMCGRAWSaddle up for Tim McGraw’s SUNDOWN HEAVEN TOWN TOUR! The tour kicks off this May at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater and it celebrates the release of his album, Two Lanes of Freedom. Since the new year McGraw has tallied up two GRAMMY nominations and seven Academy of Country Music Awards nominations including Album of the Year, Single Record, and Vocal Event. His lead single “Lookin’ For That Girl” debuted at #10 on Billboard’s Country Digital Songs chart.

“This last year was unbelievable, and I don’t have any plans to let off the gas now. We didn’t want to waste any time getting new music out,” said McGraw. “With every album, my approach is to push a few of my own boundaries and try things I’ve never done before. It was hard to choose a lead single off this project because I really felt like we had six or seven good options. I kept coming back to ‘That Girl’ because even though it may be a little different for me sonically, I couldn’t get it out of my head!”

On the tour, Tim McGraw will be joined by rising star and season 3 winner of NBC’s “The Voice,” Cassadee Pope. Since the release of her album, FRAME BY FRAME, Cassadee has over 1.7 million tracks sold to date. Tickets for the SUNDOWN HEAVEN TOWN TOUR go on sale next Friday February 14 at 10 AM and will be available at ticketmaster.com and livenation.com.

Howard Stern & Jerry Seinfeld: Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Two Jews kvetching over coffee?! It’s as if I’m home for Yom Kippur! Howard Stern joined Jerry Seinfeld for Seinfeld’s Crackle show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and hilarity ensued. Seinfeld dodged Stern’s Leno questions, followed by a very funny accusation that Stern’s obsession with Seinfeld’s sexual prowess might be based on Stern’s homosexual tendencies. Stern also revealed some touching childhood moments about his insecurity and his bid for his father’s affection, which was beautifully juxtaposed against his arrogant declaration that he’s the greatest guy in the history of radio. If you listen to Stern’s radio show, you’d know that Seinfeld and Stern have yet to reunite post-filming, despite Stern’s desire to cultivate a friendship. In fact, when Stern inquired on-the-air about the exact date this episode would be released, Seinfeld’s assistant reached out with details. My guess? Seinfeld’s wife might not be a Stern fan. But what do I know? Watch below to see the two titans in action.

George Clooney v. Gwyneth Paltrow v. Vanity Fair — OUCH

In an effort to annihilate her haters, Gwyneth Paltrow garnered some more. For months it’s been rumored that Vanity Fair will run a “take down” piece on Paltrow, which will focus on why the public likes to pounce on the star and why her likability leaves a little to be desired. While I find the interest entirely confusing (i.e. WHO CARES), Paltrow’s reaction is more notable, given that she emailed everyone in Hollywood to bully them into boycotting the magazine altogether. That list allegedly included George Clooney, who objected to be dragged into her mess. Watch Clooney poke fun at Paltrow during his Vanity Fair shoot, and watch Julia Roberts’ very hilarious reaction.

American Idol Does Hollywood — Ratings Climb

American Idol is up in the ratings, and all the credit goes to the current judging panel, who traded the word “pitchy” for a vocabulary full of other critiques, with Harry Connick Jr. leading the pack. When one contestant asked for a reason he got axed, Connick clarified Jennifer Lopez’s very generic feedback to explain how the contestant, “Looked at the floor the entire time.” As for another group who felt they killed it, Connick squashed their hubris with a very heated critique, explaining that ‘Say My Name’ by Destiny’s Child has “no melody.” Ouch! I wonder what Beyonce will say. Watch a few of my favorite moments below.

Ashton Kutcher v. Charlie Sheen: Jimmy Kimmel Throwdown

In an earnest plea to be released from Charle Sheen’s twitter enslavement, Ashton Kutcher took to Jimmy Kimmel to ask Charlie Sheen to stop talking about him. Watch below to see Kutcher remind Sheen that three full years have passed since Sheen’s Two and a Half Men departure.
