Dishmaster Vacation — Happy Turkey Day!

It’s that time of year again. The time of year when you’re reminded that no matter how far you move from home or how much you travel the world, there is no one that can cook quite like your mother. And to think — there’s a holiday to justify such a wonderful feast! So in honor of this year’s Thanksgiving, The Dishmaster is taking a much needed vacation from all things gossip. I sure have a lot to be thankful for on turkey day. Good friends, good family, and good readers. See you next Wednesday!

Dear ‘X Factor’ Judges — Stop Crying!

For those that know The Dishmaster, you’re aware that emotion makes me uncomfortable. So you can imagine my discomfort to discover that all the judges on ‘X Factor’ are crying hysterically after every performance. Do they lack any semblance of internal control? It’s awkward and unnecessary, and in the case of Nicole Scherzinger — it looks fake. Isn’t this technically a place of work? Are they really that moved? Am I just a heartless prick? Watch Leroy Bell sing ‘Angel’ below, and then wait until the end to see Scherzinger’s curious, unmovable face.

Vintage Celebrity Feud: Julia Roberts v. Steven Spielberg

Julia Roberts is one of those untouchable celebrities who manages to keep a pristine reputation despite a history of questionable behavior. But here at The Dishmaster, it’s always fun to remind my readers of celebrity feuds amongst Hollywood titans. One such feud happened in 1991 on the set of Steven Spielberg’s ‘Hook.’ Rumors circulated during filming that Roberts was extremely difficult to work with, and she soon developed the clever nickname “Tinkerhell”. When Spielberg was asked about the rumors during a ’60 Minutes’ interview, he slyly said, “It was an unfortunate time for us to work together.” The “difficult time” in question was Roberts’ decision to leave Kiefer Sutherland just three days before their wedding date, a choice that the press deemed to be related to some kind of a “nervous breakdown.” When Roberts got wind of Spielberg’s comment, she wasn’t pleased. She told Vanity Fair, “I saw that [interview] and my eyes popped out of my head. I couldn’t believe that this person that I knew and trusted was actually hesitating to come to my defense. It was the first time that I felt I had a turncoat in my midst.” But Spielberg didn’t back down. His representative issued a statement in response, saying, “It was just a tough time in her life. Fortunately, she went on to great success, and so did Steven.”

Quote of the Day — Cameron Crowe on Firing Ashton Kutcher

“I’ll spend months working with an actor, and I think I spent four months with Ashton. At a certain point, it’s like, ‘This is not meant to be.'” ‘Elizabethtown’ director Cameron Crowe on firing Ashton Kutcher because of his poor acting performance and subsequently replacing him with Orlando Bloom.

J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff — Best Freestyle — DWTS!

J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff won last night’s Dancing With the Stars freestyle round by a landslide. Though I love Derek Hough and Cheryl Burke, they barely compared. Burke’s freestyle was far too contained, and Hough’s lacked the originality and fun that he’s known for. Plus, Karina has never won the competition, and this is her year. Did I mention that she has one of the best bodies I’ve ever seen in my life? First I’ll buy that tiny little outfit as motivation, and then I’ll start ballroom dancing. Watch below.

Quote of the Day — ‘X Factor’s’ Stacy Francis

“I respect Nicole and I love her but I think that as a creative executive — Simon, that’s the lane that he’s in, you know?  So that’s when I think I crashed and burned — those last two weeks when I didn’t have his help.  And unfortunately, I wasn’t in his category.  So unfortunately, I had to bite the bullet.” ‘X Factor’s’ Stacy Francis on whether Nicole Scherzinger’s poor song-choices resulted in her elimination from the competition and whether she would have rather had Simon Cowell as her mentor.

‘Hugo’ — Movie Review

Written By: Kris Arnold, Contributing Editor

‘Hugo’ might be the most personal film of Martin Scorcese’s career. Based on Brian Selznick’s children’s book, ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’, Scorcese shows his love for the history of cinema through the eyes of Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield).

Set in a dreamy version of 1930’s Paris, Cabret is an orphan who lives in a train station where he steals food and avoids the Station Inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen) who sends stray kids to an orphanage.

Cabret learned the art of clockmaking from his late father (Jude Law) and inherited his love of film. Hugo longs to finish restoring a relic left behind by his father, an automaton (a robot made of clock parts resembling a turn of the century version of C-3PO). The key to the restoration lies with another orphan, Isabelle (Chlöe Grace Moretz), and the couple she lives with (Ben Kingsley and Helen McCrory). Hugo introduces Isabelle to the magic of movies, and their quest ferries them through film history and the pioneering works of Georges Méliès.

Hugo is a film that doubles as an art exhibit, curated by Scorsese, who’s passion for cinema permeates this entire production. On display are works from a stellar cast and a list of Academy Award winners for cinematography, film editing, visual effects, music, costume design, all against the backdrop of the imaginative set designed by Dante Ferretti. At it’s core, Hugo is a touching tale with wounded characters searching for a purpose, and it will appeal to anyone passionate about the history of film.

Katy Perry Sings ‘The One That Got Away’ at the AMA’s — Beautiful!

I love Katy Perry, but when she sings, I find myself closing my eyes and imagining what she’d look like if she dressed normally. The latex dresses and ridiculous costumes just aren’t necessary, especially since she can actually sing. Listen to her beautiful song, ‘The One That Got Away,’ below.
