Mariah Carey’s New “Triumphant” Video — Underwhelms

To say I’m disappointed with Mariah Carey’s new single and video, would be a massive understatement. She should be reinventing herself, not executing the same tired formula she’s been doing for years. First, every song she writes is about “getting through the rain,” “triumphing through sorrow,” “staying strong.” Is there nothing else in her songwriting bag-of-tricks? Second, why must she flaunt her body in every shot? It appears borderline desperate, and it’s unnecessary at this stage in her career. And lastly, she’s barely singing. Who’s the star of the video? Is it Mariah? Or is it Rick Ross and Meek Mill? Before I end this post, let it be known that I unconditionally love Mariah Carey. That being said, this isn’t good enough.

Mariah Carey’s New Single — Not That “Triumphant”

I try to avoid critiquing artists if I have nothing nice to say, but since Mariah Carey has a bazillion dollars and unlimited success, I think she’ll be able to get over it. So here goes: The new single is terrible. It’s not catchy, and she’s barely singing (is there even an ascertainable chorus?). In fact, I have no idea what happened during the recording process, but it sounds as if she’s singing in a damn tunnel. Perhaps someone picked the wrong single? Let’s hope there’s better material to come. Listen below.

Mariah Carey Joins American Idol — Good Idea?

When I found out about Mariah Carey’s decision to join American Idol, I thought: “I’ll take the Mariah Carey from ten years ago, and not the Mariah Carey of today.” That’s not a dig at the current state of her career, it’s a dig at the current state of her public persona. In short — she’s almost become a caricature of herself, exuding a diva-like temperament in every interview. I miss the down-to-earth, flannel wearing Mariah Carey of the old days. To prove my point, I’ve posted a vintage interview with the superstar below. Here’s hoping she’s relatable enough to pull off this new role. After all, if Jennifer Lopez can turn her image around, so can Mariah Carey.

Mariah Carey Reveals Twins — Babara Walters Interview

It’s great to see Mariah Carey back to her normal self in an interview. She’s usually slightly nuts, and only Barbara Walters can bring out the Mariah we loved at the beginning of her career. She finally unveiled her adorable twins, and though they seem incredibly cute, I get the strange feeling that there’s some marital animosity going on. For example, when Walters asked Mariah if she trusts Cannon, Mariah responds with, “sometimes.” Watch below.

Mariah Carey on HSN — Strange Behavior

Perhaps Mariah Carey should have waited a little longer for her first television appearance since the birth of her twins. I’m not sure what’s wrong with her, and I don’t know when Mariah changed from being extremely down to earth to saying the word “dahhhh—-ling” with every sentence. I hate to compare her to Paula Abdul, but the HSN segments are awfully similar. Either it’s difficult to fill time in a coherent way while selling a product, or there’s something strange going on. To remind you of the days when Mariah Carey was extremely likable and normal, I’ve posted a vintage interview with her in addition to her HSN appearance.

Blake Shelton Not a Homophobe — Just Really Dumb

Until there’s a middle-man proof-reading celebrity tweets before they hit the web, I imagine we’ll keep seeing PR melt-downs. Blake Shelton, most recently known as a judge on the hit NBC show, The Voice, tweeted that he’s “re-writing [his] fav Shania Twain song,” and his lyrics included, “Any man that tries Touching my behind He’s gonna be a beaten, bleedin’, heaving kind of guy…” The subsequent outrage warranted the standard apology tweet, with Shelton saying, he “seriously apologize[s],” and “it wasn’t meant that way.” He also whined about the twitter-sphere “jumping on everything” he says. How is it possible that Shelton is the victim in this? Though I’m sure he has a gay best friend and therefore isn’t a “homophobe,” perhaps he could take a little responsibility for his stupidity. Is it seriously beyond his comprehension that his tweet was inappropriate? It was not “taken the wrong way,” but rather, it was just wrong in general. Don’t blame us — blame yourself.
