‘Cookin’ With Gas’ at The Groundlings — MUST-SEE COMEDY

Cookin' With Gas

When you enter The Groundlings theater, it feels as if you’ve discovered a far-off place in LA LA LAND where everyone comes to play and imagination is limitless. The sketch comedy troupe was formed in 1974, and its produced some of Hollywood’s best players, including Jimmy Fallon, Will Farrell, Cheryl Hines, Jack Black, Lisa Kudrow, and many more.

Last Thursday, I attended ‘Cookin’ With Gas,’ an all-improv show that’s ruled by suggestions from the audience. Some shout-outs are more original than others, and it’s up to the director to steer the ship in the most creative way possible.

Though the Main Company make their on-the-spot antics seem easy, it’s far from it. In fact, the mere rigor of The Groundlings audition process explains why this heavily vetted group can produce such comedic variety with so little preparation. They’re play-time powerhouses, and the packed theater each week is deserved.

Though there are many shows on the schedule worth seeing, ‘Cookin’ With Gas’ is a sensational standout. And in case you’re looking for the right reason to attend — I’d advise you to bring a date. You can tell a lot about people by what makes them laugh the hardest.

Carrie Underwood Sings ‘Yesterday’ — Watch EMMY Performance

While there’s no doubt Carrie Underwood is a consummate professional with a captivating voice, her country rendition of The Beatles’ ‘Yesterday,” left me confused. First, if you’re going to ask a country singer to pay tribute to song-writing’s greatest titans, then you might as well ask her to change the pronouns so the lyrics make sense for a female vocalist. I understand the desire to stay true to the original material — but if that’s the case — then why book a country singer? And one more thing: Is this the Grammys or the Emmys? Listen below.

Jesse & The Rippers Reunite — Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Full House’

For Full House fans, this treat tops just about anything. John Stamos reunited with his television band, Jesse & The Rippers, for a throwback on Fallon. He even got Bob Saget to show up, along with his on-screen wife (and off screen love interest?), Lori Loughlin, for a full-on performance. Plus, there’s a mullet involved. Watch below.

Howard Stern Takes Over Jimmy Fallon — Offers Tonight Show Advice

Howard Stern appeared on Jimmy Fallon and, true to form, took over his show. He arrived with some sage advice, telling Fallon that he needs to amp up his “killer instinct” to compete with Kimmel and sack his beloved “game week,” which Stern called boring. In fact, I was astonished to discover the Fallon didn’t take Stern’s advice in the moment, and instead opted to keep in game week rather than prolonging his Stern interview for a third segment (something most late-night hosts do if the interview is going well). Here’s my advice to Fallon: If you going to secure the king of all media for your show, you should listen — and GAME WEEK SUCKS. Watch below.

Jimmy Fallon & Justin Timberlake — History of Rap 4

Jimmy FallonJustin Timberlake has single-handedly proven that artists aren’t shackled to their genre. To be fair, JLO likely started it when she went from acting to music, but it seems considerably harder to do the opposite. And adding comedy to the mix is the apocalypse of versatility. Watch below to see Timberlake perform his fourth installment of The History of Rap with Jimmy Fallon.

Allow me to take the time to also point out Fallon’s new-found niche in Late Night. The guy sure identified his brand.

Leno Out, Fallon In? Late-Night Rumors Resurface

The Tonight ShowHere we go again. Rumor has it that NBC is looking to replace Jay Leno with Jimmy Fallon as the host of The Tonight Show when Leno’s contract expires in 2014. Though Leno still has competitive ratings, NBC allegedly fears that Kimmel is a strong contender for the coveted 18-34 market, and when Leno’s star fades, CBS might poach Kimmel if Letterman retires, which will tank NBC. Too confusing? Here’s a shorter summary: Leno has an expiration date, and NBC wants to stay ahead of the game before Kimmel becomes king.

While NBC needs a game plan, since they have yet to get a hit show on the air, my suggestion is that they find the right team of people to make creative decisions before they become doomed with another late-night debacle. The first one was embarrassing enough, and they won’t survive another. So until I see a ratings surge in other areas, I’d hold off on trusting the executives behind these “rumors”

Carrie Underwood Debuts Her “Two Black Cadillacs.”

Carrie Underwood might be the only artist who can maintain a model-citizen exterior while murdering someone. And if there’s anything I know for sure, it’s not to cheat on the country star, who has elevated her tire-slashing attack to something far more serious. But you gotta hand it to the girl — she’s cornered the country market on creative lyrics. Watch the premiere of “Two Black Cadillacs.”
