Jimmy Fallon squeezed into his tight, white pants for a stellar song and dance, and Jennifer Lopez joined him. American Idol Hits Ratings Low — An Inside Look at What Went Wrong

Many entertainment outlets have widely reported on the decline of American Idol, with The Voice now taking the talent-show crown. While viewer fatigue might explain the end of an era, there has to more. First, this year’s judging panel is the best in years, so it can’t be the cast. Can it be the contestants? American Idol eliminated an essential component of previous years, moving up the start date during “Rush Week.” It’s possible this served to freshen the format, but it also threw the contestants into the deep end of the pool too soon. As a result, the top picks are much less polished. In fact, there’s really no standout performer to take the top spot. This failing can also be attributed to the judges who picked these players to place in the coveted live shows. And though Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban are proven powerhouses in the industry with incredible inside knowledge of music, that doesn’t mean they are adept at A&R. Actually, The Voice is also guilty of this critique, given that after multiple seasons on the air, they have yet to find a star. Simon Cowell might have been liked for his caustic barbs, but he also has a proven A&R track record, which might explain why American Idol has produced a wide array of big-name talent through the years (see Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, and more). And since he’s also responsible for assembling One Direction, it’s clear the man’s still got it. As for whether the show can be saved, I don’t have a solution other than to suggest the format is still not fresh enough in a now-competitive environment. Plus, these singers simply aren’t good enough. Watch the videos below to see the only singers that stand a chance.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Visits The Tonight Show — GET TO THE CHOPPER!

As a Tonight Show staple, it only makes sense for Arnold Schwarzenegger to visit Jimmy Fallon. The screen legend is also known for his sense of humor, so Fallon put him to the test with a hilarious SNL style skit, with Schwarzenegger hosting QVC while uttering his famous line from The Predator. Watch ‘GET TO THE CHOPPER’ below.

Jimmy Kimmel Covers Esquire — Talks Jimmy Fallon, Poop, & Pranks

Jimmy Kimmel covered this month’s Esquire Magazine, and the late night funnyman gave us an inside look at some behind-the-scenes action, along with some very gross details about his father. Check out some choice quotes below.

On Jimmy Fallon:

My only complaint about Jimmy Fallon is the first name: Jimmy. People get us mixed up all the time. No one remembers which Jimmy is which. Or they think I’m him, which can only make you feel like you should be him. Actually, he says the same thing happens to him. Jimmy. He’s like an athlete out there. He can jump high, act, sing. He’s a true performer. I’m a broadcaster. That’s how I come at this. Not a stand-up, not an actor, not a commentator. A broadcaster.”

About his pranks:

“I always found that it’s not entirely bad, because the victims always tend to come through. They show their humanity. They go beyond their limits—try to help, drive to places that don’t exist, and come back to ask what they should do next, if only to make it all stop. I’m the asshole, yes, but they generally reaffirm their humanity. I always end up recognizing the fact that people are basically good.”

On Rob Ford:

“The truth is, right now, Rob Ford is keeping me in business. There’s new video every day. The mayor of Toronto throwing candy canes at small children. The mayor wandering into a dance club. I don’t even have to write it. I sit back and watch him. He’s pranking the world.”

About his job:

This is the job. The only job for a person like me. I mean, I like to draw. I’m really good at it. I’m a good artist, and I think that’s what I would have done had radio not worked out for me. But here I am. You won’t see me doing anything else in the next twenty-five years.”

About texts from his father:

My dad is fond of texting me pictures of his poop.” He sighs, looks at the phone. “They can be fairly impressive, but it’s always a little stunning.” Simply put: Why? “He’s just proud,” Kimmel says. “But he wants me to beg him to stop.”

Kristin Wiig Impersonates Harry Styles on Fallon — WATCH NOW

Though Jimmy Fallon might lack Jay Leno’s monologue mastery, he’s certainly superior in the sketch department. As a Saturday Night Live alum, Fallon knows how to keep it fresh, often asking his former cast mates for creative appearances on his show. Kristen Wiig captured the night with a horrible Harry Styles impression, which was so confusingly bad it was good. Click below to see Wiig chuck the English accent in favor of her own. Plus, she “sang.” Enjoy!

U2 Sings ‘Ordinary Love’ on Jimmy Fallon — LISTEN NOW

Sometimes the best performances are understated. As the first musical act to perform on ‘The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon,’ U2 sang, ‘Ordinary Love,’ a beautiful song from the biography film, ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,’ which is up for Best Original Song at the 2014 Oscars. Watch the awe-inducing acoustic performance below.

Carrie Underwood in The Sound of Music Live! — How’d She Do?!

Risk-takers are worth celebrating, especially when those risks encourage families to take time together, in a world dictated by the demands of multi-tasking, technology, and endless email-checking. For one of the first times in a long time, NBC thought outside the box and produced The Sound of Music Live! with Carrie Underwood as its star. Though there are inevitable assaults on Underwood’s acting chops and unfair comparisons to Julie Andrews, the country crooner held her own and rose to the occasion.

Carrie Underwood’s career trajectory has consistently impressed me. She began on American Idol and could have easily rested on her laurels with expected albums and tours, but she’s instead pushed herself in unpredictable ways. She’s hosted awards shows, poked public fun at her cohorts (see Jimmy Fallon), and now — The Sound of Music Live! There are stories about her insane talent at memorizing lines and devotion to the project, and it showed. Overall, I loved it. And judging from the 18 million viewers, so did the public. If you missed it, check it out below.
